Decent book, but I own better ones
By Richard Sherwood
I am a custom carpenter in the metro Detroit area, and am addicted to trim books. I use them to come up with and/or show ideas to my customers. As a result I have a large library. I picked up this book hoping to find something new. Its title is a little bit misleading, and I think they stretched the truth a little bit with their claim of 1001 Ideas. There are a lot of details pictured in the book, but I think too many of the 1001 are together in one picture (room) that is too small to highlight each idea. I own much better books, and find myself going to them far more often than this book when looking for new ideas or solutions for my customers' spaces. Don't get me wrong, the book is not a terrible book. It just does not live up to the title in my oppinion, and as I wrote above, I own better books on trimwork. Check out my other reviews for titles.

4.5-star idea book
By L. Harris
This is definitely a "big picture" idea book. Lots of pictures to give you ideas about how you can use trim, as well as some design tips and discussions of using trim, the use of colors and such. My only real complaint is that I wish there were more closeups so I could see more detail on the trim used in some of the rooms.

It's not at all a guide for installing trim, which makes the brief chapter covering the tools used to install trim seem a bit out of place. But I wanted trim ideas and this has them, and at a reasonable price. There are plenty of books that discuss installing trim.

The Book that Made Your World: How the Bible Created the Soul of Western Civilization, by Vishal Mangalwadi

Understand where we came from.

Whether you're an avid student of the Bible or a skeptic of its relevance, The Book That Made Your World will transform your perception of its influence on virtually every facet of Western civilization.

Indian philosopher Vishal Mangalwadi reveals the personal motivation that fueled his own study of the Bible and systematically illustrates how its precepts became the framework for societal structure throughout the last millennium. From politics and science, to academia and technology, the Bible's sacred copy became the key that unlocked the Western mind.

Through Mangalwadi's wide-ranging and fascinating investigation, you'll discover:

  • What triggered the West's passion for scientific, medical, and technological advancement
  • How the biblical notion of human dignity informs the West's social structure and how it intersects with other worldviews
  • How the Bible created a fertile ground for women to find social and economic empowerment
  • How the Bible has uniquely equipped the West to cultivate compassion, human rights, prosperity, and strong families
  • The role of the Bible in the transformation of education
  • How the modern literary notion of a hero has been shaped by the Bible's archetypal protagonist

Journey with Mangalwadi as he examines the origins of a civilization's greatness and the misguided beliefs that threaten to unravel its progress. Learn how the Bible transformed the social, political, and religious institutions that have sustained Western culture for the past millennium, and discover how secular corruption endangers the stability and longevity of Western civilization.

Endorsements:

“This is an extremely significant piece of work with huge global implications. Vishal brings a timely message.” (Ravi Zacharias, author, Walking from East to West and Beyond Opinion)

“In polite society, the mere mention of the Bible often introduces a certain measure of anxiety. A serious discussion on the Bible can bring outright contempt. Therefore, it is most refreshing to encounter this engaging and informed assessment of the Bible’s profound impact on the modern world. Where Bloom laments the closing of the American mind, Mangalwadi brings a refreshing optimism.” (Stanley Mattson, founder and president, C. S. Lewis Foundation)

“Vishal Mangalwadi recounts history in very broad strokes, always using his cross-cultural perspectives for highlighting the many benefits of biblical principles in shaping civilization.” (George Marsden, professor, University of Notre Dame; author, Fundamentalism and American Culture)

A masterpiece in writing and reasoning.
By Bill Muehlenberg
The broad-brush thesis of this book is this: without the Judeo-Christian worldview, there would be no Western civilisation as we know it. The Hebrew Old Testament and Greek New Testament have contributed more to the development of the West than any other single factor.

In over 400 information-rich pages the Indian-born scholar documents how the Bible directly and profoundly contributed to the rise of the West. And not only has the West benefited immeasurably - so too has the rest of the world. Indeed, he argues that the "Bible was the force that created modern India" as well.

Of course this thesis is not new. One thinks of the recent works by Rodney Stark, Jonathan Hill, or Alvin Schmidt. Also recall the two volumes by D. James Kennedy: What if Jesus Had Never Been Born? (1994) and What if the Bible Had Never Been Written? (1998).

But here we have a masterful presentation of the data in a finely written and cogently argued volume. As Mangalwadi reminds us, the Bible first of all transforms individual human beings, who in turn transform entire nations. In every area of life we see this remarkable record of personal and social transformation.

In whatever area we examine, we see the hand of Scripture all over it. Be it science, or health care, or literature, or learning, or liberty, the biblical worldview touched and transformed entire societies. Mangalwadi very capably discusses the big picture as well as the many individual cases.

Consider the area of technology for example. A quote from Marburg historian Ernst Benz sets the stage: "Christian beliefs provided the rationale, and faith the motive energy for western technology." Says Mangalwadi, "Benz had studied and experienced Buddhism in Japan. The antitechnological impulses in Zen led him to explore whether Europe's technological advances were somehow rooted in Christian beliefs and attitudes. His research led him to the conclusion that the biblical worldview was indeed the key to understanding Western technology."

While Indian sages presented God as a dancer or dreamer, the biblical God was a Creator God, the architect of the cosmos. And the incarnation of Jesus reminded Christian philosophers that matter had a spiritual purpose in its creation. Thus Biblical cosmology had a direct bearing on the rise of Western science and technology.

But as Mangalwadi notes, Christian compassion was an equally important factor: "Christian spirituality has emphasized compassion, service, and liberation far more than the need to establish human dominion over creation." That is indeed a vital element here.

He reminds us that India and Africa did not lack in ingenious minds; but how they were deployed matters greatly. "The Egyptians living along the Nile built the pyramids while barbarians inhabited Western Europe. The problem was that the engineers who made pyramids to honor the bones of kings and queens did not bother making wheelbarrows for their slaves."

Speaking of slavery, he reminds us of how early on anti-slavery sentiment arose in Christian communities. Christians were the main ones responsible for ending slavery in the West. He cites Professor Stark: "A virtual Who's Who of `Enlightenment' figures fully accepted slavery. . . . It was not philosophers or secular intellectuals who assembled the moral indictment of slavery, but the very people they held in such contempt: men and women having intense Christian faith, who opposed slavery because it was sin."

Or consider the rise of the modern university and education. Mangalwadi asks why his university in Allahabad had a church, but no Hindu temple or Muslim mosque: "Because the university was invented and established by Christians." We are reminded that while there were brilliant Greeks and Romans, they "established no permanent institutions, no libraries, and no scholarly guilds."

All that basically came from Christians. The medieval monasteries were the seed bed of the European universities. Indeed, many of these monasteries and cathedral schools developed into these great universities. And almost all education back then was in fact Church education, something which atheist H.G. Wells even had to admit.

And again, it was not just the West which has benefitted from all this. In South Korea the education of women was mocked and discouraged, until Western Christian missionaries came there and brought about radical change. As a result, today the largest women's university in the world is located in Seoul.

Even the education of the blind and deaf was a Christian initiative. Says Mangalwadi. "The Greeks often used blind boys as galley slaves and blind girls as prostitutes. Jesus, however, restored their sight." Christian missionaries the world over followed in the positive example of Christ.

He continues, "Darwin's secular `survival of the fittest' philosophy would never pay for developing an education to humanize the handicapped. Every traditional culture left them to their fate or karma. Some deliberately exposed handicapped infants to death. The Bible alone presents a compassionate God who has come to this earth to save us from our sin and its consequences - including sickness and death."

Or look at the issue of literature. The truth is, much of the world's greatest literature is traceable to the Judeo-Christian worldview. Whether we are talking about the Book of Job or the sonnets of Shakespeare, the world is immensely richer because of the Bible. Of course the Greco-Roman era produced great literature, but in terms of the lasting transformative impact on the world, and the impact on English writers, the Bible is without peer

The greatness of this literature is due to the greatness of the Judeo-Christian worldview: "Indian myths, like Greco-Roman myths, are about aristocrats - the ruling elite and sages. The heroes of Genesis, by contrast, are ordinary people with feet of clay."

Indeed, nation-building literature is based on and all about ordinary individuals who found greatness, not in themselves, but by being made in God's image, and being the special objects of his compassion. Transformation of character is a defining feature of Scripture, and that in turn leads to the transformation of nations.

Simply consider as but one example how the Bible so soundly impacted Harriet Beecher Stowe, and how her Uncle Tom's Cabin so powerfully impacted Lincoln and the abolitionists in their fight against slavery in America. The examples are endless.

Indeed, the examples of so many other areas turned upside down by the Bible and those who have been transformed by it would fill hundreds, nay thousands, of volumes. But Mangalwadi here does a superb job of demonstrating how in one area after another, the impact of Scripture has been overwhelming, and overwhelmingly a force for good.

It is commonplace today to trash both Western culture and the biblical worldview which so powerfully and comprehensively led to it. This remarkable book reminds us of the overwhelming good of both. We are not spared the many faults of the West, nor how Christians have at times been a negative influence, however.

But on the whole, the very real benefits we enjoy today in the West, and in so many other parts of the world, are directly the result of the Bible, and the millions of individuals who have been radically transformed by it. Such transformed individuals have gone on to transform their world.

We so very much need to be reminded of all this, and this book performs this task exceptionally well. Every one of us needs to get this book, master its contents, and share it with others. We are all in your debt Vishal Mangalwadi.

Required reading to understand history
By Peter Ingemi
THE BOOK THAT MADE YOUR WORLD is an intellectual Tour De Force arguing and illustrating the influence of the Bible on Western Civilization and its positive role in creating much of the good that many in the west take for granted, from the freedoms of women to simple respect for life.

He takes an interesting path to his thesis; starting with Kurt Cobain vs Bach and going on from there. His individual chapters take specific aspects of Western Culture from Humanity, Heroism, Science, Morality, Self and Technology and reflect how the biblical view not only shaped these and other aspects in a positive direction in the western world, but how the lack of the Bible and the biblical worldview caused other cultures to fall behind both in terms of technology and in what the west would consider respect for basic humanity.

Those who read the volume will be surprised at how little the Bible itself is quoted, instead it tells of cultures, nations and individuals driven by its message and how that makes all the difference.

Some of his arguments are stronger to advance, the points concerning corruption in office, the university system and technology are pretty easy gimmes. Most interesting is the semi random inclusion of individual stories from his own life and observations from India, including the violence he and his families and friends suffered due to his faith and actions.

He is unwilling to sugar coat the difference between the liberal laws of India on the books, a gift provided and influenced by British Common Law shaped by the Bible vs the practice (or rather non-practice ) of those same laws by those officials of different cultural background non longer overseen by a colonial power. Yet he managed to convey this wile condemning colonialism as an evil. He takes full advantage of his non-western background to make points that in this politically correct world a western intellectual would find himself cashiered for making.

His weakest bits are his near obsessive worship of Martin Luther and his jabs at the Catholic Church (while extolling particular Catholic Saints like Augustine and Aquinas) Catholic readers will particularly note his minimizing of Protestant violence vs Catholics during the Reformation and after while maximizing the reverse. While annoying even that can not take away from the distinct service that he performs with his general argument.

A few of his chapters tend to twist (his chapter on Medicine in my opinion is his weakest) but his details and his history is generally sound and the credit he gives, particularity of missionaries is significant. Over and over he notes how it is people of faith who have historically made the biggest difference to those in need and that it was the drive of that Christian witness that compelled them to act for the betterment of others.

Much of what he says would be basic knowledge a mere century ago, but in this politically correct and secular age we have forgotten either by choice or accident the basic facts that he reiterates. No defender of Western Civilization will every be unarmed in a debate if fortified by this volume's facts.

No Library should be without it.

Hopeful, Skeptical, and Yearning to Learn More
By D. Renken
I have questions about the thesis of Vishal Mangalwadi's The Book That Made Your World, but this book prompts me to first ask a few questions of myself.

Am I able to approach this book without bias? As a Christian, it is of course very pleasing to hear positive statements about the influence of the Bible. I would expect God's holy word to have a great and lasting influence on individuals, as well as on communities and cultures. I believe, after all, that the God of the Bible is the creator of the universe. His word is true.

However, I found within myself an oddly opposing bias, as well. As a westerner, I am regularly exposed to multi-culturalism, anti-western thought, and outright Christianity- bashing. The mere suggestion (among even Christians sometimes) that Christianity might be superior to other religions or philosophies is met with accusations of ignorance and ethnocentrism, along with accusations that I must think "America equals Christianity".

I actually hadn't realized how much this exposure had affected my worldview until I was reading Mangawaldi's book. While my faith was making me hopeful, the influence of my unbelieving culture was making me very skeptical. As I read, I found my biases tugging against one another, leaving me unable to either accept or reject the thesis of the book.

Am I learned enough to make a fair judgment? Some of the book's critics do claim to have some expertise in Buddhism, Hinduism, or Eastern culture. But I have to wonder if those same people are as well versed in what the Bible says. To do a little American-bashing myself, I find that many well-educated Americans are abysmally ignorant of the teachings of Judaism and Christianity. I am often left wondering if these people have actually ever read the Bible. Mangawaldi seems to have a fairly rare advantage of having been immersed in several different religions or philosophies.

But, back to my own ignorance... I was impressed with the breadth of Mangalwadi's source material and found myself wanting to learn more. I wish he had included in the book a plan for the systematic study of the Bible's influence on cultures. I will have to rely on the notes and bibliography.

Given his own education, was Mangawaldi expecting a better-educated reader? One, perhaps, who had already dealt with minor issues and could focus then on the major thesis? It is a very readable book, so it is accessible by the broader public, even if not intended for that audience. If the book was not written for scholars, then it makes too many assertions to be dealt with in so short a space. The topic is massive, and the influences on culture myriad. To isolate the Bible as the primary positive influence would require a much more thorough and systematic approach. Each section of the book would merit its own volume.

All my questions aside, I am happy to find a book that challenges my thinking and spurs me on to further study. By that measure, The Book That Made Your World is a success.

stroke book review
By neuro123
Pretty good book. I'm a practicing neurologist and it really is a good and practical book. I'd give it 5 stars but one thing about the book kind of annoyed me (seemed lazy). They cut and pasted from the radiographic and sleep apnea sections in the book to other parts of the books where the subjects came up again. This happened with quite a few paragraphs on other topics that were revisited in the book. The authors could have at least paraphrased themselves later in their own book or just sent the reader to the area they quoted. Overall though the writing style and the content were excellent and something that I'd use in my daily practice. A good study tool for the vascular boards too.

The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life, by Rosamund Stone Zander, Benjamin Zander

The Art of Possibility offers a set of breakthrough practices for creativity in all human enterprises. This inspirational book is a synthesis of Rosamund Stone Zander's knowledge of cutting-edge psychology and Benjamin Zander's experiences as the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Infused with the energy of their dynamic partnership, the book joins together Ben's extraordinary talent as a mover and shaker, teacher, and communicator with Rosamund's genius for creating innovative paradigms for personal and professional fulfillment. In lively counterpoint, the authors provide us with a deep sense of the powerful role that the notion of possibility can play in every aspect of our lives.

The Zanders' deceptively simple practices are based on two premises: that life is composed as a story ("it's all invented") and that, with new definitions, much more is possible than people ordinarily think. The book shifts our perspective with uplifting stories, parables, and anecdotes. From "Giving an A" to the mysterious "Rule Number 6" to "Leading from Any Chair"--the account of Ben's stunning realization that the conductor/leader's power is directly linked to how much greatness he is willing to grant to others--each practice offers an opportunity for personal and organizational transformation.

Amazon.com Review
The lure of this book's promise starts with the assumption in its title. Possibility--that big, all-encompassing, wide-open-door concept--is an art? Well, who doesn't want to be a skilled artist, whether in the director's chair, the boardroom, on the factory floor, or even just in dealing with life's everyday situations? Becoming an artist, however, requires discipline, and what the authors of The Art of Possibility offer is a set of practices designed to "initiate a new approach to current conditions, based on uncommon assumptions about the nature of the world."

If that sounds a little too airy-fairy for you, don't be put off; this is no mere self-improvement book, with a wimpy mandate to transform its readers into "nicer" people. Instead, it's a collection of illustrations and advice that suggests a way to change your entire outlook on life and, in the process, open up a new realm of possibility. Consider, for example, the practice of "Giving an A," whether to yourself or to others. Not intended as a way to measure someone's performance against standards, this practice instead recognizes that "the player who looks least engaged may be the most committed member of the group," and speaks to their passion rather than their cynicism. It creates possibility in an interaction and does away with power disparities to unite a team in its efforts. Or consider "Being the Board," where instead of defining yourself as a playing piece, or even as the strategist, you see yourself as the framework for the entire game. In this scenario, assigning blame or gaining control becomes futile, while seeking to become an instrument for effective partnerships becomes possible.

Packed with such examples of personal and professional interactions, the book presents complex ideas on perception and recognition in a readable, useable style. The authors' combined, eclectic experience in music and painting (as well as family therapy and executive workshops) infuses their examples with vibrant color and sound. The relevance to corporate situations and relationships is well developed, and they don't rely on dry case studies to do it. Indeed, this book assumes the emotional intelligence and desire to engage of its reader, promising access to the rewards of that door-opening notion--possibility--in return. --S. Ketchum

From Publishers Weekly
In a lively, sensible manual for turning life's obstacles into possibilities, the Zanders introduce various "tools" for transformation, drawing on their extensive experiences with musicians, students and patients in therapy (Rosamund is a psychotherapist and painter; Benjamin is the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic). In a chapter entitled "Giving an A," for example, Benjamin relates a classroom technique that allows students to envision their own futures: all students in his class receive an A if they write him a postdated letter relating "the story of what will have happened to you by next May that is in line with this extraordinary grade." Other chapters emphasize practices such as thinking in terms of making a personal "contribution" rather than stark "success or failure"; "lightening up" in order to see a problem from a new perspective (e.g., a patient of Rosamund's was able to have a sensual experience with her husband even though she was angry at him); and reassessing "frameworks for possibility" (e.g., a teacher shaved her head in order to "reframe the meaning" of a hairless class member who had leukemia). The authors' emphasis on "practice," the importance of "flow" and the joy in creation and expression is apt and often truly inspiring. Although not groundbreaking, the Zanders' suggestions constitute sound, practical advice that has much in common with Zen concepts of holism, balance and grace.

From Booklist
Rosamund Stone Zander is a family therapist and Benjamin Zander is the conductor for the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, whom Morley Safer called "the energizer bunny of classical music" when 60 Minutes profiled him. So what are this former husband and wife doing writing a book for the Harvard Business School? Actually, Benjamin is a popular draw on the motivational seminar circuit. In his talks, he uses music and conducting as symbols for creativity and leadership, and he frequently ends a presentation with a rousing group-sing of "Ode to Joy." Instead of issuing well-worn nostrums such as "think outside the box," the pair warns that "incremental changes that lead to new ways of doing things based on old beliefs" will not result in transformation. The change they prescribe requires nothing less than a "total shift of posture, perceptions, beliefs, and thought processes." They use the arts, their own multifaceted experiences, and their boundless energy to show just how renewal can take place. David Rouse

Reading the book led me to challenge some of my limiting beliefs.
By Tim Larison
"Draw a different frame around the same set of circumstances and new pathways come into view," say authors Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander in their book The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life. This brought to mind one of my favorite quotes by the late Wayne Dyer, ""If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." I like this philosophy, and I wanted to read more.

The Art of Possibility is full of examples to emphasize that life works better when you have a positive mental outlook. The authors tell a story of two shoe factory salesmen exploring new markets in Africa. After assessing the situation, both send telegrams:

SITUATION HOPELESS. STOP. NO ONE WEARS SHOES.

GLORIOUS BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY. STOP. THEY HAVE NO SHOES.

"The one who sees no shoes, all the evidence points to hopelessness. To his colleague, the same conditions point to abundance and possibility," say the Zanders. Through easy to understand examples like this the authors drive home their point. I also liked the stories the Zanders share from their professions. Benjamin Zander is the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Rosamund Stone Zander (nickname of "Roz" in the book) has a private practice in family therapy.

The Art of Possibility is more than just pie in the sky optimism. The Zanders recommend a realistic approach to negative thoughts and feelings. Their approach "doesn’t mean you should drown out your negative feelings or pretend you like what you really can’t stand. It doesn’t mean you should work to achieve some 'higher plane of existence' so you can 'transcend negativity'," they feel. "It simply means, being present without resistance: being present to what is happening and present to your reactions, no matter how intense. The capacity to be present to everything that is happening, without resistance, creates possibility."

Reading the book led me to challenge some of my limiting beliefs. "We can replace the narratives that hold us back by inventing wiser stories, free from childish fears, and in doing so, disperse long-held psychological stumbling blocks," say the Zanders. Perhaps our interpretations of the events in our lives do not match reality. "We see a map of the world, not the world itself," the authors feel.

Uplifting, great stories yet not very concrete
By Bas Vodde
The Art of the Possibility is an uplifting little book about thinking practices that allow you to move away from "the world of measurement" into "the world of possibility". The book is full of positive stories to attempt to change your perspective in life. The stories are fun, yet the practices weren't always very concrete. It was an easy read, yet it wasn't a book that gave me a major AHA! moment.

The book is about 200 pages, written in 12 chapters for 12 different practices. Most of the practices are perspective-practices that try to trigger you into a different way of thinking about yourself and about the world. For example, the practice of "Giving an A" is the practice that asks to always look at people from their potential perspective and avoid judging them directly. Always give an A to people... think the best of them and that will get out the best of them.

All other practices are similar. I find them useful, yet at times native. However, they aren't very concrete and they all kinda relate is seeing the world from the perspective of... possibility.

Great vantage point!
By JanneZack
This is a pretty good book, though possible not as meaningful as some others I've read in the same genre have been for me (self help; self improvement; better life tactics). But, as a musician the analogies were fabulous! Written by a conductor, there were countless stories that were applicable to me, a part-time musician. I'm getting some great ideas and this book reinforces lessons taught in other books. I think the more you read, and as things are said in a different way by different authors, the better the chance you will actually make the changes! It is well worth the read.

Train to Pakistan, by Khushwant Singh

“In the summer of 1947, when the creation of the state of Pakistan was formally announced, ten million people—Muslims and Hindus and Sikhs—were in flight. By the time the monsoon broke, almost a million of them were dead, and all of northern India was in arms, in terror, or in hiding. The only remaining oases of peace were a scatter of little villages lost in the remote reaches of the frontier. One of these villages was Mano Majra.”

It is a place, Khushwant Singh goes on to tell us at the beginning of this classic novel, where Sikhs and Muslims have lived together in peace for hundreds of years. Then one day, at the end of the summer, the “ghost train” arrives, a silent, incredible funeral train loaded with the bodies of thousands of refugees, bringing the village its first taste of the horrors of the civil war. Train to Pakistan is the story of this isolated village that is plunged into the abyss of religious hate. It is also the story of a Sikh boy and a Muslim girl whose love endured and transcends the ravages of war.

A harrowing journey to the inevitable...
By Luan Gaines
The summer of the Partition of India in 1947 marked a season of bloodshed that stunned and horrified those living through the nightmare. Entire families were forced to abandon their land for resettlement to Muslim Pakistan and Hindu India. Once that fateful line was drawn in the sand, the threat of destruction became a reality of stunning proportions. Travelers clogged the roads on carts, on foot, but mostly on trains, where they perched precariously on the roofs, clung to the sides, wherever grasping fingers could find purchase. Muslim turned against Hindu, Hindu against Muslim, in their frantic effort to escape the encroaching massacre. But the violence followed the refugees. The farther from the cities they ran, the more the indiscriminate killing infected the countryside, only to collide again and again in a futile attempt to reach safety. Almost ten million people were assigned for relocation and by the end of this bloody chapter, nearly a million were slain. A particular brutality overtook the frenzied mobs, driven frantic by rage and fear. Women were raped before the anguished eyes of their husbands, entire families robbed, dismembered, murdered and thrown aside like garbage until the streets were cluttered with human carnage.
The trains kept running. For many remote villages the supply trains were part of the clockwork of daily life, until even those over-burdened trains, off-schedule, pulled into the stations, silent, no lights or signs of humanity, their fateful cargo quiet as the grave. At first the villagers of tiny Mano Majra were unconcerned, complacent in their cooperative lifestyle, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and quasi-Christian. Lulled by distance and a false sense of security, the villagers depended upon one another to sustain their meager quality of life, a balanced system that served everyone's needs. There had been rumors of the arrival of the silent "ghost trains" that moved quietly along the tracks, grinding slowly to a halt at the end of the line, filled with slaughtered refugees.
When the first ghost train came to Mano Majra the villagers were stunned. Abandoning chores, they gathered on rooftops to watch in silent fascination. With the second train, they were ordered to participate in burying the dead before the approaching monsoons made burial impossible. But reality struck fear into their simple hearts when all the Muslims of Mano Majra were ordered to evacuate immediately, stripped of property other than what they could carry. The remaining Hindus and Sikhs were ordered to prepare for an attack on the next train to Pakistan, with few weapons other than clubs and spears. The soldiers controlled the arms supply and would begin the attack with a volley of shots. When the people realized that this particular train would be carrying their own former friends and neighbors, they too were caught, helpless in the iron fist of history, save one disreputable (Hindu) dacoit whose intended (Muslim) wife sat among her fellow refugees. The story builds impressive steam as it lurches toward destiny, begging for the relief of action. In the end, the inevitable collision of conscience and expediency looms like a nacreous cloud above the hearts of these unsophisticated men, a mere slender thread of hope creating unbearable tension.
I was impressed with the power of Singh's timeless narrative, as the characters are propelled toward a shattering climax, as potentially devastating as any incomprehensible actions of mankind's penchant for destruction. I was struck also, by the irony: how the proliferation of a rail system that infused previously unknown economic growth potential to formerly remote areas, also became the particular transport of Death. Only a few years earlier, a rail system in another part of the world carried innumerable Jews to Hitler's ovens, another recent barbaric use of Progress, originally intended to further enrich the potential accomplishments of the human race.

If India interests you, you cannot do without this book.
By Jundla
The first work by an Indian author that I ever read, Train to Pakistan is a superb book on many levels. It is a documentary of Punjab, its people, its culture. Its a narrative of the gruesome events that burned northern India in 1947. It is a story of the cultural, political, and intellectual atmosphere of India at the time. And it succeeds BRILLIANTLY. It brings the reader into the picture so vividly, its rather disturbing. If the reader is a product of the society the athor writes about, or is intimately familiar with it, and possesses any amount of intellectual spark, this book is an absolute must read. How much it'll mean to you if you are not familiar with the culture of Punjab, I don't know.

Train to Pakistan: Breaking the Cycle of Revenge
By Martin Asiner
Ethnic conflict has been a staple of cross-cultural contact for as long as more than one race and religion have tried to co-exist. In the border between Pakistan and India, the theme of revenge killing calling for ever more revenge killing has found a clear voice in TRAIN TO PAKISTAN by Khushwant Singh. Nearly everyone in the novel is flawed to some degree with the effects and aftereffects of ethnic cleansing. There is no clear cut hero although a criminal named Jugga comes closest. Jugga is a Sikh thief who happens to take a Moslem woman as a lover. Their illicit relation is a microcosm of all that is terribly wrong when the cut of a person's beard counts more than the content of his soul. Jugga is far from an angel, but he slowly grows in stature from the baseness of his profession to one who is forced to contemplate the consequences of his own role in the ongoing cycle of killing between Sikh and Moslem. He is used as a pawn in the Sikh's killing of innocent Moslems, and his choice is the same that all men of revived conscience have had to face in similar such times: should he participate willingly even eagerly in the proposed slaughter of a train of deported Moslems shipped unceremoniously to Pakistan or should he speak out against the insanity that is insane only to him? The various flaws of all the characters of the novel--their vicious caste system, their willingness to demonize other races, their unwillingness to question even the most fundamental elements of their dogma--all stem from the cycle of killing that did not begin with the trainload of Sikh corpses that entered the sleepy town of Mano Majra in India. This mass killing is simply a sociological given: its root cause goes back uncounted centuries of strife between Moslem and Sikh yet it is hailed by Sikhs as 'the' reason to replicate the slaughter of Moslems on yet another train headed to Pakistan. Khushwant Singh portrays a society of confused, angry villagers who see no way out of the ongoing cycle of killing except to perpetuate that killing. Singh suggests that the men of good conscience who try to make even token attempts to bring this insanity to a halt are few and far between. The events of clashes between Sikh and Moslem that have occurred since this book was first published in 1956 further suggest that such men of good conscience have grown fewer in number.

Is That a Fact? A Field Guide for Evaluating Statistical and Scientific Information, by Mark Battersby

We are inundated by scientific and statistical information, but what should we believe? How much should we trust the polls on the latest electoral campaign? When a physician tells us that a diagnosis of cancer is 90% certain or a scientist informs us that recent studies support global warming, what should we conclude? How can we acquire reliable statistical information? Once we have it, how do we evaluate it? Despite the importance of these questions to our lives, many of us have only a vague idea of how to answer them. In this admirably clear and engaging book, Mark Battersby provides a practical guide to thinking critically about scientific and statistical information. The goal of the book is not only to explain how to identify misleading statistical information, but also to give readers the understanding necessary to evaluate and use statistical and statistically based scientific information in their own decision making.

Review
"Mark Battersby's Is That a Fact? is a readable, entertaining, reliable and useful guide to an important life skill in today's complex world: understanding, evaluating and using statistical information and reports of scientific research. Using a framework of four "critical questions" (What does the claim mean? How good is the evidence? What else is relevant? What are the fallacies?), Battersby takes the reader through the topics of polling, data, graphs, correlations and causes, and scientific claims. He then shows how to use the information one has evaluated to make decisions. Is That a Fact? is studded with extensive discussions of real-life examples that touch on matters of concern to everyone, such as the health risks of second-hand smoke and of cell-phone use. It is amply illustrated with figures, charts and well-drawn cartoons that vividly bring home key points." (David Hitchcock)

"Is That a Fact? provides an entertaining and enlightening tour of the often confusing world of probability and statistics, always with an eye on their proper role in good reasoning. A delightful discussion that beautifully clarifies what is all too often confusing or just plain confused. The book help will ordinary citizens to better understand and evaluate all sorts of scientific claims as they occur in the popular press and public policy debates. Hats off to Mark Battersby!" (Harvey Siegel)

"One of the intellectual currents of our time has been a revolution in the study of reasoning and argument. Philosophers and other academics have broadened their horizons and turned their attention to the study and analysis of the reasoning, arguments and attempts at persuasion that inundate our lives. Mark Battersby has been an integral part of the movement in this direction. In Is That A Fact? he provides an engaging and thoroughly readable introduction to critical thinking on statistical and scientific claims. It can usefully inform the thinking of everyone who has to contend with such claims in their professional or personal lives." (Leo Groarke)

"Using timely and important examples, Professor Battersby provides a careful and well-documented discussion of statistics, and does this without sacrificing liveliness or readability. Is That a Fact? is a fascinating book about statistics to give to all your friends." (Trudy Govier)

"Is That a Fact? should be compulsory reading for every journalist, especially anyone calling themselves a 'science writer' or 'investigative reporter'. This sometimes humorous and well illustrated guide to the world of data, graphs, and statistics is well written and fun to read. Finally we learn the difference between a correlation and an association and how to tell one from the other. Battersby also shows how to spot classic fallacies of reasoning, and how to read scientific articles with a critical eye. Highly recommended." (Barry Shell)

Applies critical thinking to everyday life
By Olivia Allred
Is That a Fact? by Mark Battersby is a very well-written and well-organized piece of writing about critical thinking of statistics. Battersby’s style is very similar to that of, Asking the Right Questions, by M. Neil Browne and Stuart M. Keeley in the fact that there is a repetitive format for all of the chapters in each of the books. Battersby’s guide to statistical and scientific information is informative while also enjoyable to read.
Battersby’s guide is about how to analyze statistical information and through critical thinking methods, decide whether the statistics support the claim, or not. Each chapter is about some form of statistics, whether it is polling, graphs or sampling and is followed by examples and a series of two to three critical thinking questions. This formatting allows the reader to be interactive with the book. Being given a real-life example of something can really help to solidify a concept in the readers mind.
There are questions following the breakdown of the topic, which encourage the reader to apply what they are learning while they read. This structuring of information is a very effective way to prepare the reader for application of the information they are learning in the real world. For example, in chapter 3, Polling: The Basics, Battersby gives an example of a poll about “Kyoto.” He then proceeds to ask the two big questions, “What is being claimed?” and “How good is the evidence?” Battersby explains, “The way the question is worded is one of the first things to look at in assessing how good the evidence for a poll’s claim is” (Battersby 25). The writing and the layout of this book are at a level that seems to be directed at the general public; Battersby avoids using jargon that may deter the readers from grasping the concept completely.
One more technique that should be appreciated about Battersby’s writing is his fluidity. Battersby has mastered the concept that fluidity is key when trying to successfully convey a message to a reader. Battersbys’ use of footnotes allows the reader to finish one train of thought before seeking out another. If there is a topic that may have some discrepancy or may be unclear, Battersby has provided a footnote in order to further explain or clarify said topic.
Although one of Battersby’s main points is to not put too much emphasis on personal stories, testimonies, or anecdotes, Battersby uses numerous personal stories in his book. In his first footnote on page 2, he gives his disclaimer about his use of stories. “Throughout the text I advise against putting too much reliance on stories and anecdotes, but here I am giving an anecdote in aid of my argument. Hypocrisy? Not really. Anecdotes are memorable and edifying. They have a role to play in explanation and instruction. Anecdotes are a problem only when they are used as evidence for a sweeping generalization. However, here I am not using the story as evidence of a generalization but as an illustration” (Battersby 2). The fact that Battersby provided this disclaimer to his readers gives him reliability and accountability. It is clear he wants his readers to feel as though they can and should trust the information he is giving them.
Battersby’s writing is completely the opposite of credulous. The entire purpose of his book is to encourage people to be more skeptical of the scientific and statistical information they are receiving from the media. He wants to equip the general public with the skills necessary to think critically and make informed decisions about the information portrayed in the media. All too often, people assume someone who makes a claim with out any valid proof to be correct because of their authority or because they are inexperienced in that particular area. It is Battersby’s goal to remind us that just because something may sound accurate, doesn’t mean it is. Battersby provides the essential skills in this book to prepare the reader to dig deeper and not just believe something because it sounds right.
This book has been written in order to apply to a very general group of people. Battersby covers the topic of using critical thinking to analyze the often-confusing world of probability and statistics that the popular press and media portrays to us daily. In order to make these puzzling subjects applicable to the general public, he uses everyday issues such as cell-phone use and the health hazards created by tobacco. Also, in order to further simplify some of the more complicated subjects such as making educated causal inferences, Battersby provides charts and illustrations in order to clarify his descriptions, such as the graph on page 149.
A notable and defining feature about this book is Battersby’s talent of not only telling and showing the reader how to rationalize and evaluate the plethora of deceiving information produced by the media on a daily basis, but also his ability to prepare the reader to do it on their own.
Overall, this book should be read by everyone because is it a necessity to gain the knowledge and ability to comprehend the massive amount of misleading information sent to the public through the various forms of media. This book is the perfect option for anyone in any field of work who is searching to gain a better grasp of the world around them and attain a better understanding of the decisions they make.

The Trainable Cat: A Practical Guide to Making Life Happier for You and Your Cat, by John Bradshaw, Sarah Ellis

The idea of training rarely crosses cat owners' minds, and we often assume that cats can't and don't need to be trained. But in The Trainable Cat, bestselling anthrozoologist John Bradshaw and cat expert Sarah Ellis show that not only can cats be trained, but they absolutely must be in order to strengthen the bond between pet and owner, reduce their anxiety, and maximize their happiness.

Twenty-first-century urban life can be taxing for cats who historically have been wild and solitary hunters, hostile to change and turmoil. Cats today are forced to live within the confines of cramped city apartments, in the company of unfamiliar people and other animals, and to travel in compact cat carriers. Such living conditions can create scared and angry cats—cats who spend hours hiding under the bed, abruptly bite their owners, or urinate in their houses when new pets are introduced—leaving owners scratched and disheartened.

But a great deal of pet-owner discord can easily be prevented by simply training our cats. Once we understand our beloved pet's journey from wild predator to domesticated animal, we can train them to overcome their natural inhibitions, fears, and anxieties.

Full of training tips and exercises for nearly every scenario—from introducing your cat to a new baby to helping cats deal with visits to the vet—The Trainable Cat is the essential bible for cat owners and lovers.

Review
Julie Hecht, MSc, author of the Dog Spies blog on Scientific American
“Typically, your cat doesn't care what you read. This is not one of those times. Cats around the world would be ecstatic to learn that you are not one of those people saying 'cats can't be trained.' John Bradshaw and Sarah Ellis are experts in feline behavior, and together they bring clarity to a vastly misunderstood topic. Cat training can help cats lead happier lives alongside the people who love them. And it's fun! Read this book. Your cat will thank you.”

Miranda K. Workman, clinical assistant professor, animal behavior, ecology, and conservation, Canisius College
“John and Sarah have demystified cat training, making it accessible to all cat lovers—from professionals to owners alike. Clear instructions for training along with real-life anecdotes expose the amazing potential of our domestic cats. This is a must read for all cat lovers who are interested in providing the best life possible while building a deeply trusting partnership with their feline companions. This book has the potential to save lives!”

New York Times Book Review
“Interesting premise.... The goal here is not to get your cat ready for the Big Apple Circus, but to make it easy for you to get your cat to do all the things many cats resist: swallow a pill, go to the vet, take a bath, or stop trying to disembowel your new cat.... My favorite tip is this: To get a cat used to a new home, you take some white cotton gloves and basically feel up your cat, then rub the gloves all over the furnishing. Smelling her own scent, the cat will believe she's been there before and calm down. This is genius.”

Hal Herzog, author of Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat: Why It's So Hard to Think Straight About Animals
“Do you want your cat to come when you call it, stop destroying the furniture or killing birds, and enjoy taking a walk on a leash? Then this is the book for you. By integrating established principles of animal learning with the latest in feline science, The Trainable Cat will enrich the lives of cats and their owners.”

Steve Dale, Certified Animal Behavior Consultant and author of The Good Cat!
“You can train a cat to do just about anything a dog can do, except a cat may do it better! John Bradshaw and Sarah Ellis illustrate how cats are trainable, but, more importantly, the authors bust long-held myths about cats and cat behavior along the way. As a result, both experienced stronger bonds with their purring pals.”

Ilona Rodan, DVM, board certified feline specialist and coauthor of Feline Behavioral Health and Welfare
“The Trainable Cat breaks down the myth that cats cannot be trained. Not only can they be trained but training improves cats' quality of life. This book should be required reading for all cat lovers, including all veterinary professionals who work with cats. The Trainable Cat will change how you think about cats, improving relationships and preventing behavior problems.”

Mikel Delgado, certified cat behavior consultant, scientist, and blogger
“I love this book! We often greatly underestimate the capabilities of our pet cats, and The Trainable Cat is a thorough yet completely accessible resounding YES in response to the question: Can you train a cat? Training can not only solve behavior problems, but it strengthens the bond between a cat and their humans. This book will enhance the welfare of cats everywhere, and change how we think about what cats can do.”

Jacqueline Munera, certified cat behavior consultant and cocreator of What is my cat saying? Cat communication 101
“Finally, a comprehensive look at how operant training can be used to benefit our feline friends by preventing or modifying behaviors that we humans find upsetting. Bonus, it's really fun too!”

Ingrid Johnson, certified cat behavior consultant, Fundamentally Feline
“Fantastic! The Trainable Cat is an accessible resource for cat parents and professionals alike. The authors debunk common myths and misconceptions about cats and their trainability, all while equipping trainers with the knowledge they'll need to overcome challenges relating to rewards, motivation, and individual learning styles. I will definitely recommend this book to my clients!”

Life changer for you and your cat
By SoFi
Update - 1 month of training and my cat...:
- sits
- jumps
- comes
- goes to any place I point out
...on comand.
We keep making videos and share them with friends who are struck in disbelief "in general already, and about YOUR cat especially".

How?:
I tried to apply everything the author explained and also followed her recommendation of using a target stick with clicker (Karen Pryor Clicker Training Terry Ryan Clik Stik for Pet Training https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CDRJ3FG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0NwjybY8QCCKK)

Original Review:
First and foremost, as this lately starts to irritate me here on Amazon: I did NOT receive this book for free for an "honest" review.
Me and my cat:
I am the owner of one 6 year old tabby cat with quite a bold (some might even say "evil" lol) character. My primary goal was to spend quality time with him and perhaps teach him a trick or two that I could show off to guests, lol. Only while reading the book I realized how achievable and useful training of my cat may be as we all have to administer medications here or there, or need to get the cat to the vet, and many more little situations.
Background:
I listened to an interview with the author, a scientist with a PhD in cat behavior, on the radio (NPR) and found that everything she explained made a lot of sense to me. Hence, the mediocre ratings on Amazon did not concern me as much as they usually would.
The Book:
Pros: I learned incredibly much about my cat through this book. I cannot count the times I thought "this is so obvious, why did I never think about it (this way) before". The author provides just the right amount of science to me without aiming to make me a PhD in cat behavior myself. I personally like to understand things a bit deeper, learn about the how's and why's, rather than someone telling me "Just do it. Here is step A.". Additionally, with this deeper understanding I felt the author equipped me with the knowledge and flexibility to adjust to my cat's (very special, lol, or not?) personality. This book comes with a plethora of very useful, relevant tips that made me very excited during reading (better me than the cat), so that I could not wait to start trying those things out. And, besides all explanations and tips, it will give you many, very clear, very simple step-by-step instructions broken down in achievable mini goals for any cat.
Cons: It is not really a Con of this book as such, but this book is clearly not for you if you dislike reading a book in general and rather prefer pictures, illustrations, or solely simple statements. You really do not need to be a rocket scientist at all by any means but it will be more pleasurable for you if you bring a bit of intellectual curiosity into the game.
I hope this helped.

When my cat started coming inside when I called, I just had to write a review.
By VTNerd
I have to say this book is great. One thing I would say about reading it is to read the first 3-4 chapters serially, and then choose the topics that are of interest to you from there on out. The "key skills" are the most important, as well as understanding some basics about cat psychology. The rest of the book are examples about how to put those skills to use, and how the authors organize the training activities from there.

The results are not instant, and I would encourage the other reviewers to be patient and keep training their cats. Although, they're pretty quick. I bought the book when it came out, and I've been training my cats for two months. Granted, my cats are fairly good natured to begin with, and I was really looking for one thing in particular... To train my indoor/outdoor cats to come inside at night when I called.

I was inspired to write this review when I called my cat Juniper in tonight, calling "Juniper -- come here! come here!" which is here command to come, and.... She ran at lightening speed across the yard and into the house to get her treat. I couldn't be happier. It's taken a couple months, but, that kind of result is just amazing.

There's other things I'd like to train them, and also one of my cats is not food motivated at all which is making training somewhat difficult, but, I'm slowly learning what rewards he does respond to and I'm certain I can have success if I'm able to figure out the training method that works best for him.

Like I said, this isn't about teaching your cat tricks!
By Leslie Logar
This is NOT about teaching tricks to your cat. This is the most detailed analysis on cat behavior and how to condition or recondition your cat to all the obstacles that appear during a cats life life; like adding a new cat, adding a dog, the carrier, driving in the vehicle, etc.

I have been working with cats and an owner for over 40+ years. I also work very closely with a volunteer non-profit cat organization, I have access to all the members for questions and solving problems, YET I HAVE NEVER obtained this level of psychological assessment and training from any of these sources including ALL the vets I have encountered throughout these years.

This has been the most valuable resource to date. I was also able to find the audio book version (11 hours) through my local library. I have listened to this multiple times. The book has been a quick way to jump to the chapter and the specific instructions in writing to refresh my memory. If you are a cat fancier or just want to get through our everyday challenges with the cat, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. I highly recommend this book. Like I said, this isn't about teaching your cat tricks.

It's a lot of data, but so well worth it. ENJOY
