I will no longer hear Dad's deep but feeble voice say over the phone, "It's just Dad calling."Like the author of Christmas Whistles, I buried my grief after my father's death. Too many other losses coming back to back allowed me to sail through Dad's funeral without even shedding a tear. The tears would come later, though, and I'm still learning that grief catches us by surprise when we least expect it. But grief also allows us to open up to the beauty around us. It calls us to pay attention.The author of "Christmas Whistles" was paying attention as she stood on a crowded train station platform in Switzerland the first Christmas after her father's death. What Bonnie witnessed that day will renew your faith in love, family, and the relationships that bind us to each other, even when we are separated by distance or death.

What a lovely tale to commemorate the love of a daughter for her father

What a lovely tale to commemorate the love of a daughter for her father, the grief of his passing, and the loss of other treasured family in a 48 hour period . This had to be so difficult to write. We never get over the loss of loved ones, we just learn to rejoice in the time we had with them.

How sweet that the father and daughter at the train station had their special way of finding each other. This story was sad and uplifting at the same time. Not an easy task for a writer, but Bonnie has that special gift.

WOW - what can I say besides break out the handkerchiefs. Short, sincere and especially in this day and age - important to anyone who still has a heart. It has a natural ring that can appeal to all. Not flowery - just straight to the heart.
Bravo - need more like this and of course it helps that its the reason for the season.

Everything you need to know to tell flannel board stories.

I train childcare teachers and use this book when teaching how to tell flannel board stories. The author gives guidelines for using the flannel board story with different age groups. A total of 50+ stories, poems, and songs are included, some appropriate for the younger child, some for ages five and older. The selection is varied, including familiar stories such as "Three Billy Goats Gruff" and "The Three Pigs". Also included are folktales which are less familiar but equally wonderful. For each story, the author shares special directions for using the flannel board characters and how to include the children in the telling of that story. For me, a special feature of this book are the patterns for the characters--they are large, clear, and easy to duplicate.

Stock up on suggested ingredients!!

I love this cookbook!! Healthy recipes that all look amazing and far from bland. My only complaint with this book is that when they give you a list at the beginning of the book of things to stock your fridge and pantry with.... they mean it! These ingredients are used in almost all recipes and are not things I normally keep in my house. Which I guess tells you how much I need this cookbook to help me start cooking with more real and healthy foods! Time to grocery shop before I can try anything in this book!

Yummy recipes but carb counts not included

So far, the recipes I have tried from this book are amazing. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I was very disappointed that a cookbook written by a type 1 diabetic did not include carb counts! Yes, we can figure it out ourselves, but it would have been nice to have it included.

A must read if you care about what's happening to journalism

Everyone who cares about the "new media" -- whether for good or ill -- should read this book. It will make you a better citizen. Even if you don't care particularly about news and journalism, the history and personalities make it a fun and informative read.

I had the privilege of reading the early drafts of this entire book. Now I have the real hardcover version in my hands that arrived today from Amazon. As the son (and grandson) of a printer, a person who did work with newspapers (helping them convert to computerized typesetting in the 1970's), and an early blogger from 1999, I've lived through a very small part of the world covered in this book. I've invented things (the pioneering VisiCalc spreadsheet) and met many of those who were inventing the tools used by today's citizen and professional journalists. Reading this book was so helpful in putting the incredible evolution of journalism in the USA in perspective. What my generation has lived through is such a small part of a fascinating story with towering, sometimes courageous, and inventive individuals in each generation.

Chris weaves together the history of the United States with the evolution of the practice and business of telling us about that history, and influencing it, as it happened. An experienced feature writer as well as an historian and teacher, he brings the personalities to life and relates them to what mattered to creating the journalism we've known and that we'll be seeing in the future. I think students of business and technology will find this of interest, in addition to the obvious journalism, history, and government majors.

While the length (461 pages plus end-notes with many illuminating gems) may seem long, the sections of each chapter stand alone well like a magazine article as each personality or event is presented. They all flow together as a complete narrative if, like me, you find this hard to put down.

Great teacher's resource

I teach a History of the Media class to high school students. This book is a good read if you have an interest in the development of the media in the United States and it is an excellent supplement for me as a resource. I haver several other book/textbook resources but this is by far the most comprehensive.

An exceptional achievement

Professor Daly's book is by far the best history of U.S. journalism that I have ever encountered. The breadth of Daly's scholarship is astounding: he spent almost a decade digging into every aspect of U.S. media history, and the book meets the highest standards of academic inquiry in the Colonial Era as well as it does through the Civil War, the rise of radio and television, and the perpetual news cycle and digital technology of today.

Daly's writing is also a particular advantage of the book, because it will draw in beginning and advanced students of the field. Daly tells the story of U.S. journalism through minutely crafted biographies of central figures and milestone events. He has a naturally authoritative voice, and his command of his research resonates through every passage.

If you are considering a textbook to use for a journalism history course, you will not find a more thorough, informative, insightful, or better book. If you are simply interested in learning about U.S. media history, this is the best place to start. This is an achievement on a par with Michael Schudson's "Discovering the News." Daly's book is a profoundly impressive landmark in the history of journalism.

I should add that I am a lecturer in journalism and journalism history at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, though this review reflects only my view. I have been teaching journalism and journalism history for some 15 years at universities on three continents, and I was asked to teach the introductory course at ASU, Principles and History of Journalism, partly because of my knowledge of journalism history.

Beautiful, but filled with errors

Although the pictures in this book are beautiful, some of the information is flat out wrong. There is a picture of a Sting Ray labeled "Red Ant". There is a picture of a King Vulture labeled as an Andean Condor. Another picture shows a Ground Squirrel, but is labeled as a Prairie Dog. The labels for the Sea Nettle and Urchin are reversed. I expected more from National Geographic.

A perfect animal encyclopedia for kids

It is amazingly hard to find a large format encyclopedia of animals. This book was perfect though as it has beautiful photographs of all the animals with a bit of text relating to each, and is large enough to cover a broad range of creatures. Of course, the photographs are excellent given it is authored by National Geographic. This is the perfect book for kids interested in animals who will enjoy leafing through the pages and looking at the pictures. I think it is directed at and perfect for the 3 to 8 year olds; plenty of photos with good overview text. It is certainly a hit with my four and six year old!

One of the best, a must for anyone who moves

Sweigard's breakdown of the body's bony and muscular systems is easy to understand and precise. Even more interesting are her studies in ideokinesis and methods of facilitating positive change in the human body through the mind. It may sound like mumbo-jumbo, but Sweigard's techniques and methods are rock-solid scientific. This is an enduring anatomy and kinesiology handbook that hasn't gone out of date yet and probably won't. A must for anyone who moves, especially dancers and athletes.

Incredible!

Lulu Swiegard's Human Movement Potential is a must read for every serious yoga student. Its the source book for what's call ideokinesis, a name she coined for a wonderful system of body-mind education based on the use of creative imagery. Ideokinesis can be translated roughly as the 'image or thought as facilitator of the movement.'

Much of what I learned in Yoga classes in my early years as a student I found echoed in Sweigard's book, which was written in the 1970s. This book is chock full of the most erudite knowledge pertaining to how postures and phsyical development connects with our personalities, needs, strengths, and challenges.

Two other great books on the topic that I recommend are: Ideokinesis: A Creative Approach to Human Movement and The Thinking Body.

The turning words.

Being a fan of Mabel Todd, I bought this book for the difference in viewpoint and phrasing. The changes in perspective that will make me stop, think, smile. It has fulfilled that expectation!
