Good Book, Abysmal Printing and Binding

The content of the book itself is great, but the binding and printing are seriously sub-Kinko's quality. And Routledge has the audacity to charge $35 for the book. Unbelievable.

Provides Focus for Learning German Vocabulary

Every teacher of the German language whose native language is English should have this vocabulary guide. It provides essential data on how often German words occur, which can help prioritize learning when time is short. I have found it motivates learning to know the most commonly used words. I use it in conjunction with a good German/English dictionary.

I'm finding this dictionary of frequency very useful for making flashcards to increase my vocabulary. While there are frequency lists online, the ones I've found don't usually take the time to eliminate all the different forms of a given word. They also don't give example sentences like this book does.

Not razor-sharp, but still recommended...

In preparation for a webcast I'm giving this month, I'm working through the book Eclipse by Steve Holzner (O'Reilly). While not perfect, it's a good tool for learning about the package.

Chapter list: Essential Eclipse; Java Development; Testing and Debugging; Working in Teams; Building Eclipse Projects Using Ant; GUI Programming: From Applets to Swing; SWT: Buttons, Text, Labels, Lists, Layouts, and Events; SWT: Menus, Toolbars, Sliders, Trees, and Dialogs; Web Development; Developing Struts Applications with Eclipse; Developing a Plug-in: The Plug-in Development Environment, Manifests, and Extension Points; Developing a Plug-in: Creating Editors and Views; Eclipse 3.0; Index

For the person new to Eclipse, this will do a decent job in getting you started. Up through the Using Ant chapter, the focus is primarily on Eclipse. The examples deal with the package, and that seems to be the primary focus. After that, the style seems to change a bit. The GUI development chapters seem to focus a lot on GUI programming, and then after that's finished, they show you how to do it in Eclipse. Mind you, it's good information, but the focus has shifted. The plug-in chapter gets back to Eclipse as the primary focus again. While there are entire books dedicated to plug-in development, this chapter will get you comfortable with the idea and concepts.

So is the book perfect? No. I feel that the material could have been a bit more consistent as to what the foremost goal was... learning the Eclipse platform. But having said that, it still accomplishes the goal of teaching you how Eclipse works in different scenarios. I'd definitely recommend this as an initial Eclipse text for someone.

O'Reilly swings and misses with this one

I've used big time and expensive IDEs in my time, Together Control Center to name just one, and I was excited to finally get Eclipse and begin learning it. I always look for an O'Reilly book on a subject first because they are usually really good. This book, although good, misses the point of the title of the book. It should have been titled "Intro to Web Programming with an Introduction to Eclipse".

Another reviewer pointed out that the first three chapters covers how to use Eclipse. The rest concentrate on actually using Eclipse to do each chapter's small projects - GUI, Web, and plugins.

I was looking for a book that covered Eclipse in total, how to use it, the neat stuff, everything that Eclipse has to offer. This book doesn't even tell me how to makea bookmark in Eclipse. I saw that in the Eclipse Cookbook TOC at O'Reilly.

The 3.0 coverage is minimal. This book is not about 3.0. That is to be expected since software changes faster than authors can learn the new versions and write the words.

This is a good book if you want a very gentle intro to Eclipse, but don't look to become an Eclipse GURU from it.

a dissapointment

first of all the book i got (yes i checked the isbn)
was only 317 pages and was not subtitled,
"A Java Developer's Guide" but instead "Programming Java Applications".
There was less than 20 pages coverage of 3.0. very lightwieght.
I wouldn't say this was a book for programmers, but the equivalent of a user's manual for eclipse(eclipse made EZ, or eclipse for VB programmers).
The first two chapters(60 pages) is just telling you what the menu items do. Almost all the material in this book was covered in the Manning Eclipse in Action book. The exception being this book had 3 chapters(60 pages on gui and swt), and a chapter on struts. I only kept the book for that stuff.
I get the impression this is just a knock-off that book so that O'Reilly gets some of the beginner market...
Probably not worth your time if you have used eclipse for more than 10 days...

Tall and mysterious, raven-haired Kalli is Maldinga's secret keeper. Villagers come to her forest home to tell her their shameful secrets, which are transformed into objects that Kalli stores in the drawers that line her cottage. The villagers go away "a little lighter of heart," but Kalli is so weighed down by their revelations that she eventually takes to her bed. It's the blacksmith who comes up with the fine idea of sharing good secrets, which include a whispered declaration from the potter's handsome son: "I love the secret-keeper." All is repaired a little too quickly, but children won't mind too much; they'll likely be captivated by the warm tones of Solomon's paintings, framed in round or rectangular borders, and by Kalli and her fellow Maldingans, their eyes shining with alertness and intelligence as they live harmoniously with nature. Daily the people of the village come through the woods to Kalli's house to tell their guilty secrets, which she hides away in the hundreds of wooden drawers that line the walls of her cottage, like apothecary cases or library catalog cabinets. Only one person, Taln, the potter, does not come to visit. As fall turns to winter, the secrets begin to weigh heavily on Kalli, and she becomes ill. When a young girl discovers her, the villagers attempt a cure by sharing some happy secrets. After a child tells his secret, a blue butterfly flies from Kalli's hands. As the villagers share good secrets with Kalli and with each other, Kalli recovers and spring returns. Then Taln whispers his secret: "I love the secret-keeper." Solomon's lovely watercolors, framed with jewel-toned borders, varied in size, shape and placement on heavy creamy paper, add fascinating details and emotional depth to this gentle jewel of a tale that will prompt discussion on the sharing of secrets, good and bad. The Power of Happy Secrets

This is a refreshing tale, perfectly illustrated. My copy of The Secret Keeper has already been loaned and read aloud to intrigued school children. The story produced plenty of curiosity, compassion for Kalli the Secret Keeper, and good discussion.

Kate Coombs has a talent for delightful invention. It's not surprising that a dishonest baker, an irresponsible match maker, or many another burdened villager would feel some relief after Kalli has heard one of their guilty secrets. But readers may be surprised to learn what fittingly symbolic objects the secrets turn into in Kalli's magical hands.

This delightful tale is not just about the burdens of the confidante or counselor; it's about how a community comes to broaden its understanding of secret-sharing. In a crisis, the villagers' decency and love emerge. What about telling their very ill Kalli "bright and fair secrets, like a spring morning"? The secrets told in this part of the story (and the butterflies and other beauteous things they turn into) are wonderfully simple and touching. This is where The Secret Keeper becomes a story of honesty and love, and really gains its gentle power.

The dust jacket says Kate Coombs' first book is for readers "4 to 8", but this is a fine book for older children, too, and parents and other adults--perhaps, especially, those in the helping professions.

Refreshingly fabulous

I had the honor to read a review copy of The Secret Keeper and it is one of my all-time favorite books. I predict that you will be hearing a lot more about Kate Coombs and her books.

The Secret Keeper reads like a fast-paced traditional folk tale. I loved the wry humor and the subtle lessons.

4 1/2 Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave"

"The Secret-Keeper" is a sort of child's version of Nathaniel West's masterpiece, "Miss Lonely Hearts," in which a "helper" is similarly overcome by the demands of those needing help. Of course, as a kids' book, the tone is far lighter and the outcome happier, but they share a theme about the burden of receiving confession.

In a beautifully designed and illustrated medieval/hobbit-like setting, long-haired, quiet "Kalli" welcomes men and women of all ages to tell her their secrets. Some secrets seem relatively innocent ("A plain girl loved a handsome boy and dared not tell him"), some, not so (A bribe induces a matchmaker to makes a bad match), but all of them feel heavy to those who hide them. The magical proceedings, the slightly moralistic tone, and the appearance of hero and heroine give this a classic fairy tale aura, and the arched and rectangular framed pictures (done in lush, ornate design with watercolor, oil, and collage) recall the prototypical illustrations of N.C. Wyeth and other early masters. It's truly a gorgeous book.

The plot revolves around Kalli's unselfish generosity, and how it almost overwhelms her. However, the author doesn't clearly establish Kalli's secret-collecting method, causing some initial unnecessary confusion. "Shed," the baker, admits that he cheats when he weighs his customers' bread. In exchange for her confession taking..."He gave Kalli a basket of fresh rolls and a copper coin." When Kalli hears his secret, she "nodded and caught his words in his hand." Now comes the confusing part: "After Shed trudged away with a sigh, Kalli opened her hand again. Shed's secret was a small grey rock, like a stale breadcrumb. Kalli went inside and tucked the secret into one of the tiny drawers that lines the walls of her cottage.

After a few of these exchanges, it's clear that Kalli has the ability to transform the secret into a concrete object, something that can be stored away. However, author Coombs uses a metaphor, "Shed's secret was a small grey rock," something too abstract for concrete-thinking kids. It's also unfortunate that Ms. Coombs compares the rock to a "stale bread crumb" --did Shed cheat by somehow inserting the small rock into his loaves? A simple and clearer presentation might have been something like, "Kalli took his secret and turned it into a small grey rock." All this becomes clearer after a few more examples, but adult readers might want to supplement the text with gestures or some ready explanations if questioned.

Kalli's transformative powers, while itself a metaphor, also drives the plot. As she collects more and more secrets, changing them into small drab objects, she becomes sick. Slowly the villagers realize that they take much more from the secluded woman than any gold piece cold buy. When they discover her sick in bed, they realize that one can also tell Good Secrets, not just bad ones. As they tell her (it's all very rapid, like townspeople in a Jimmy Stewart movie: "...my husband helps folks." "I married my own true love." "I made up a song," "My mama and I dance in the meadow"), Kalli's strength and spirit begins to return. She takes each of these good secrets and changes them into objects--but beautiful, magical objects: A dragonfly, a rainbow, a meadowlark, and more all emanate from Kalli's hand, all revealed in a series of pictures that resemble tapestries. And, speaking of her hand, the quiet potter's son tells the last secret to the now healthy Kalli: "I love the secret keeper." Some toddlers and early elementary schoolers will love this touching, sentimental romance, others may not be ready for it--know your audience. I enjoyed it, and it's followed by a blissful celebration in the meadow, so idyllic and light that you half expect the love to lift the villagers into the air.

forming the preacher

This is not exactly an instructional book on preaching, as in one that teaches how to craft a sermon, improve our delivery or connect with the audience but a book that focuses on the preparation of the preacher himself. For this, it fills a huge gap amidst the scores of books on homiletics. Kinlaw succeeds in giving us a book that encourages and inspires, especially those who feel somewhat daunted by the awesome task of preaching the Word of God. Kinlaw is spot-on that it is not 'by might or by power but by the Spirit of God' that one should approach the task. It is God that makes the difference, not our learning, eloquence or charisma.. therefore the invitation to be filled constantly with the Spirit is an important one and Kinlaw shows us how, with his meditation on the Trinity, personhood and stories of ordinary individuals who were set on fire by God's own Spirit to proclaim his mighty Word. A useful reminder for seasoned preachers and aspiring ones alike.

It Took Me Six Months To Read This Book

I would read a page or two and then have to put the book down to think long and hard about the implications of what Dr. Kinlaw had written. The end result was that the book was not read. It was digested. Meditated upon. Considered. Weighed.

And it reminded me, most of all, that the act of preaching in the Church is a supernatural and spiritual event. Either that--that the Church is the "Ekklesia" and the Divine "Koinonia"--or it is nothing.

If you are a Christian pastor, ordained or a layperson, this book will challenge you and offer a new perspective on the preaching of the Word or refresh your memory as to what it is always meant to be.

Do Technologies 'Evolve'?

Basalla's 'Evolution of Technology' makes the analogy to biological evolution to explain the development of technologies: the Paleolithic chipping stone becomes the crude stone-and-wood hammer which later becomes a cast-iron hammer which eventually becomes the giant mechanical steam hammer. Of course, thinking of technology in such evolutionary terms can ONLY be analogical--tools don't have genes, and they certainly don't procreate. What tools and technologies have is diversity (a key component in evolutionary change); however, it takes human needs--necessities--to bring about technological developments. This historical combination of technological diversity and human necessity is "evolution" for Basalla.

Basalla's argument is therefore a practical method for thinking about the history of technology--one of a number of different methods (for other alternatives see anything by Arnold Pacey, or the 'Short History of Technology' by Derry and Williams). And in this respect Basalla offers a fine approach. In fact, his book may well be the most readable history of technological progress available, but it is also one that places more weight on a single analogy than the analogy itself may be able to bear.

A seminal work

Heroic historiography of science and technology has dominated well past the moment when historians had despaired of kings and heroic battles as shapers of human history. The lone scientist and inventor still hogs today's narrative. These heroes have been joined lately by visionary entrepreneurs � la Steve JOBS, who "invented the future". Humbug, says the author, and I concur wholeheartedly. This splendid book, easy to read ans understand, explains why.

There are a few million living species. Our material artifacts outnumber them easily. The author is correct in pointing out that diversity of artifacts is a distinguishing characteristic of human life. Necessity is not the reason for this stupendous diversity: "it is a testimony to the fertility of the contriving mind and to the multitudinous ways the peoples of the earth have chosen to live." (pg. 208)

The author explains this diversity of artifacts not so much by invention as by evolution: "the prevalence of artifactual continuity has been obscured by the myth of the heroic inventive genius" (pg. 208) and postulates continuity, even if convoluted and rhyzomic (my term here), rather than directed and progressive. At each point in time the potential for technological innovation is far greater than any society can hope to exploit. Play, fantasy, and emulation all collaborate to create this potential. So do psychological and intellectual factors (Chapt. III). Socio-economic and cultural factors should not be discounted (Chapt. IV).

Selection may be based on economic and military factors - we could call them "necessity" (Chap. V). In many cases, however, social and cultural factors are deeply involved (Chapt. VI). "Ultimately the selection is made in accordance with the values and perceived needs of society and in harmony with its current understanding of "the good life"." (pg. viii).

It is the author's great merit to have chosen Darwinian evolution as the overarching explanatory metaphor explaining the evolution of technology. He should be commended for this. A generation later, and with deeper knowledge of Darwinian processes, new authors are picking up this metaphor is picked up and deepening it (See Alex MESOUDI Cultural Evolution: How Darwinian Theory Can Explain Human Culture and Synthesize the Social Sciences).

Metaphors constrain as much as they explain. Contrary to speciation we do have discontinuities with artifacts - when they are used for a different purpose, so as when first a hammer was used as a weapon. Chance and whimsy probably play a larger role than they do in nature. Just an example: I've read somewhere that the race between the steam and petrol car was decided by foot-and-mouth disease. An outbreak of this disease among horses led to the elimination of troughs on public highways, which may have spread contagion. Such troughs were used to refuel steam cars, so their refueling stations were eliminated.

The author discounts somewhat path-dependent outcomes and "autonomous technologies". I'd be more reserved. As long as the laws of scarcity are not repealed, efficiency will be a main criterion for technology choice. Once efficiency enters the realm of choice, it tends to overshadow other criteria. It is also the lowest common denominator when values conflict. In fact "efficiency" has become a very hard task-master, ruling us impartially.

Individual agency remains the source of invention in the book's paradigm. Is it really so? If we are truly social animals, creativity is also social - though we may perceive is as personal, nay solitary. I would be wary of the "lone tinkerer" as much as the "lone genius". The act of creation arises from the "meeting of minds" - Newton spoke of standing on the shoulders of giants. It is in dialogue that most brilliant ideas emerge, and one is loath, as the creation unfolds, to assign its original spark to anyone. The inventor's reception of the emergent spark and the kindling and nurturing of the emergent fire assigns authorship to him. Fair enough. If one writes a history of technology, however, the social aspect should be highlighted, for it is the bed from which new ideas spring. Clustering great minds is often a winning proposition - unless the great minds drift into a tiring game of establishing a pecking order among themselves.

The author is liberal in the use of examples and "stories". Some are apt, some fascinating, and the best are "paths not taken" (pg. 189 ff.). Others tend to be overlong. And one quibble: fire antedates the emergence of homo sapiens sapiens by about one million years. Cooking food was a prerequisite for our large brains. In this sense it was not a choice, but a necessity.

The author uses the example of barbed wire, but he does not just report a lot of historical details. He also places those details in perspective by using an evoluationary model of technical change. That makes this author 100 times more interesting than had the author that just gives us historical facts.

About the Author
John Graham is the D. Richard Mead Professor of Finance at Duke University where he also serves as the Director of the CFO Global Business Outlook survey. He is coeditor of the Journal of Finance. Professor Graham is also a Research Associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research, Vice President of the Western Finance Association, and been recognised for outstanding teaching and faculty contributions at Duke and the University of Utah.

Lawrence J. Gitman is an emeritus professor of finance at San Diego State University. He received his BA from Purdue University, MBA from the University of Dayton, and PhD from the University of Cincinnati. A prolific author, Dr. Gitman has published more than 50 articles appearing in FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, the FINANCIAL REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL PLANNING, JOURNAL OF RISK AND INSURANCE, FINANCIAL SERVICES REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, FINANCIAL PRACTICE AND EDUCATION, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL EDUCATION, and other scholarly publications. He has authored and coauthored numerous best-selling textbooks on various finance and business topics as well as investing. An active member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Gitman is past president of the Academy of Financial Services, the San Diego Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, the Midwest Finance Association, and the FMA National Honor Society. In addition, he is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Dr. Gitman formerly served as a director on the CFP Board of Governors, as vice president of Financial Education for the Financial Management Association, and as director of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum. He has two grown children and lives with his wife in La Jolla, California, where he is an avid cyclist.

Michael D. Joehnk is an emeritus professor of finance at Arizona State University. In addition to his academic appointments at ASU, Dr. Joehnk spent a year as a visiting professor of finance at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He received his BA and PhD degrees from the University of Arizona and his MBA from Arizona State University. A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), he served as a member of the Candidate Curriculum Committee and of the Council of Examiners of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts. He also served as a director of the Phoenix Society of Financial Analysts and as secretary-treasurer of the Western Finance Association and was elected to two terms as vice president of the Financial Management Association. Dr. Joehnk has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles, five popular books, and numerous monographs. In addition to co-authoring several books with Dr. Gitman, Dr. Joehnk wrote the highly successful paperback tradebook INVESTING FOR SAFETY'S SAKE. He also has served as editor and contributed to several other prominent books. His articles have appeared in FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF FINANCE, JOURNAL OF BANK RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS, AAII JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, BELL JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS, DAILY BOND BUYER, FINANCIAL PLANNER, and other publications. This book itself is a quality textbook, however know that you will not get online access codes for myfinancelab.com, which could be critical in your class. You'll have to purchase that at an additional cost. You'll still be able to access a site called Pearson Smart Resources, but if I'm paying around $250 for a textbook, shouldn't registration for all the online materials be included?

On top of that, I didn't even receive a receipt/packing slip in my package for this book.

Incomplete formulas given. Several chapters very poorly organized. Practice quizes available on thier website let you know if you answered incorrectly, but don't offer correct method. Don't consider using with an online class.

As far as investing textbooks go this is probably one of the better ones. All to often it seems like textbooks are either too broad and beginner in nature or they're far to advanced and presumably assume you know much more than you do. This one strikes a fine line that makes it a fantastic educational read
