This is a clear, fresh and poignant tale of a young man--who at quick glance is the vision of everyone's success story--tries to escape the life he had trapped himself in from what some may consider paradise, San Diego, to another seeming paradise--US Virgin Island St. Thomas.

Part of the beauty of this book is that the reader is comfortably introduced to this island and its people through the protagonist's eyes with a casual familiarity as if you had also packed up your own bags and joined in the move with him. The other is knowing what is seated in the main character's mind and heart as this new place unfolds around him.

Don't let the cover and premise fool you. On its surface, the story may seem about escaping to a carefree life on the sand and having rum soaked adventures but when you delve deeper it's a peek into a chapter that so many people face in their lives, throughout the ages and throughout their lives--the continual shedding of skins and how others come into our lives and touch us, shape us and forge us. It is a common thread that binds the human experience no matter where you live and what surroundings may be about you. It is about redemption and forgiving oneself.

Finished a great first novel by Joel York. Chasing Paradise is a great read that everyone should read and I am very impressed with the thoughtfulness and life lesson in each and every twist and turn (since I have know Joel since he was much younger) and he has come a long way. This is a must read for anyone who has known Joel or who has experienced the life trial of looking for their own Paradise. I am very proud to be able to say I knew Joel when.

Great story telling, interesting characters and suspense in a tropical paradise

I loved this book and could hardly put it down once I started it. It's a story about a young man who ends up in St. John after the disappointment of his failed marriage. The story leads you through his experience of recovery from the pain of the divorce to finding himself again. Along his emotional journey you meet many interesting local characters and mainland transplants who are also on their own journeys or recoveries. Joel does an excellent job in vividly describing the people, events and the island lifestyle. There is tension in the story line that keeps building and makes you want to keep turning the page throughout the story, which ends tragically for some. I think this book has everything a good book should have, excellent writing, interesting rich characters, love, romance, hate, fear, pain, suspense, life lessons, happiness, regrets, hope and a climactic ending. For "I" the story made me feel like I came to know the characters and I found myself rooting for some and wanting to punch others in the face, maybe with a brick! Although the book is fiction, the story felt very true to life and the highs and lows we all go through. I highly recommend this book.

Dan McDonald is great!!

I give him 5 stars because he is so educated about juicing and health. He explains everything in a way anyone can understand. He also gives recipes and suggestions. By the time I read this, I had a good understanding of juicing and what the best vegetables are to juice for me. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is willing to juice for health or anyone who wants to feel great and gain health and energy.

This title provides a limited sampling of the beautiful maps in the more comprehensive National Geographic Atlas of the World. The Concise Atlas is printed on the same heavy paper stock and at the same size as the larger atlas, but in a paperback binding. While this seems a remarkable bargain at first, the atlas's binding makes it difficult to see map details that run across page gutters. It also raises questions of how well a large-format, softcover book can stand up to reference use. This title is worth considering if you want to supplement your collection with a few large maps but can't afford one of the large atlases. But it's not a good choice for reference use.

Excellent text for Student and Instructor

The text is about 2 inches thick and contains a plethora of information on virtually every topic in Engineering Mathematics. It is clear that these Professors had spent a career teaching the subject material. For the student, use the book as a reference text to provide additional insight into topics being covered in class by other texts. As there are a wealth of solved problems, not only good practice for the student but also a place to glean problems for an instructor. It is worth the investment for those that enjoy engineering math.

About the Author
Djuna Barnes was born in 1892 in Cornwall-on-Hudson in New York State. In 1912 she enrolled as a student at Pratt Institute and then at the Art Students' League, and while she was there she started to work as a reporter and illustrator for the Brooklyn Eagle. In 1921 she moved to Paris, where she lived for almost twenty years and wrote for such publications as Vanity Fair and the New Yorker. Nightwood, written in 1936, was her second novel. It is now considered a masterpiece, praised by T. S. Eliot for its 'great achievement of a style, the beauty of phrasing, the brilliance of wit and characterization, and a quality of horror and doom very nearly related to that of Elizabethan tragedy'. Her other works include A Book, a collection of short stories, poems and one-act plays; a satirical novel, Ladies Almanack; and a verse play, The Antiphon. She died in New York in 1982.

Brilliant journalism

This book is one of the most important health books I have ever read.

(My copy was called 'The Diet Delusion' which is the UK and Australian etc. title of the book 'Good Calories, Bad Calories'.)

The author is incredibly intelligent and that this book took the author more than five years to write, shows. I've read few health books so intelligently written as this one.

I thought I was quite well educated about diet and the need to restrict refined carbohydrates (for good health and to stop weight gain) but I learned so much from reading this book.

This book is not a simple book offering practical advice and a diet sheet but a detailed analysis of why low calorie diets don't work and why restricted carbohydrate/high fat diets do.

The book explains that:

1. The 'calories in, calories out' mantra is a myth

2. 'A calorie is a calorie is a calorie' is a myth

3. The 'just eat less and do more exercise to lose weight' message seems to be logical but is actually wrong and unhelpful

4. Overweight and obese people often eat no more calories, or even less, than their thinner counterparts

5. Low calorie diets also reduce the amount of nutrients in the diet

6. It is a myth that the brain and CNS needs 120 - 130 grams of carbohydrate as fuel in order to function properly, as the body can use fat and protein equally as well, and these fuels are likely the mixture our brains have evolved to prefer.

7. Restricting calories with a low fat/high carb diet just makes you hungrier and more lethargic and slows your metabolic rate. Weight loss is only maintained if the patients stays on a semi-starvation diet forever, which is impossible for most people and also undesirable. Being far more active just makes you far more hungry.

8. It is a myth that reducing calories slightly or increasing activity slightly will lead to weight loss.

9. It is a myth that we evolved through periods of feast and famine to be very good at holding onto fat. Fat gain is due to excessive insulin levels caused by high dietary refined carbohydrate intake. It is a sign of something in the body going wrong, not a healthy adaptation.

10. Fructose is not much better than glucose and the two together may cause more harm than either individually.

11. The idea of a weight 'set point' is a myth

12. Insulin is the overall fuel control for mammals. High insulin levels cause the body to store fat and stop the body from using fat as fuel. This means that high carbohydrate foods make you put on more fat, and also leave you still feeling very hungry and unsatisfied.

13. Our bodies have evolved to do best on a diet of plentiful fat and protein (including saturated fat), lots of greens and minimal fruits and starchy vegetables. This diet is the best for health and also for losing weight and stopping weight gain.

14. Dietary fat, including saturated fat, is not a cause of obesity. Refined and easily digestible carbs causing high insulin levels cause obesity.

15. To say that people are overweight due to gluttony and slothfulness is just not correct and it is very unfair. Overeating and a sedentary lifestyle are often CAUSED by eating a high carbohydrate diet! This association has wrongly been interpreted as a cause of weight gain, rather than an effect.

16. Hunger caused by eating a high carbohydrate diet (or excessive exercising while on a low calorie diet) is a very strong physiological drive and should not be thought of something mild and psychological that can be overcome with willpower. This is something serious occurring in the body, not the brain!

Thus psychological 'treatments' for obesity are inappropriate and cruel. Most people are overweight due to bad medical advice, NOT a lack of willpower, greed, laziness or because they lack 'moral fibre'

17. People have different insulin secretory responses. Even if insulin secretion is slightly off, weight gain can occur.

18. Eating large amounts of a high sugar and high fat food like popcorn is easy because the body will not use most of the carbohydrate and fat for immediate fuel but will store much of it as fat - leaving you able to eat a lot of it and still be hungry a short time later as well.

19. Eating foods with a large bulk or high in fibre wont fill you up, you need the correct proportion of macronutrients and will stay hungry until you get them.

20. Those advocating the low calorie and high carb diets for health and weight loss are not involved in legitimate science. These approaches are not supported by the evidence.

I have still not covered so many other great points!

The bottom line is that we have evolved to eat a diet that contains enough fat and protein to cause satiety, lots of green vegetables and minimal amounts of fruits and starchy vegetables. Our bodies really can't cope with huge levels of refined carbohydrate as have recently been added to the modern diet.

More detailed information about this type of diet (and the benefits of traditional foods as well such as raw milk, organ meats, bone broths and fermented foods) can be found in books such as 'Nourishing Traditions' and 'Eat Fat, Lose Fat' by Sally Fallon (of the Weston A. Price Foundation) and Deep Nutrition by Catherine Shanahan and Luke Shanahan, among others.

This book is a *very* dense read. (Those that are very ill and can't read such a long and complex book may do best to read just the first chapter and the last 2 chapters as these provide a summary to some extent.)

My only criticisms of the book are that a brief, maybe half page summary, of each chapter at the end of each chapter may have been very helpful for those of us that struggled taking in so many new facts at once due to illness or any other reason. I'd also have liked the ideas of Weston A. Price to be featured a bit more prominently than just on the acknowledgments page! But I accept that space was a concern for the author, as he states.

To the author, thank you so much for all your hard work. This is such an impressive body of work. I wish we had more investigative jounalists writing about 'controversial' topics to such a high standard.

I highly recommend this book. Check your library for a copy, at least!

This is more than a great piece of investigative journalism - it is a fascinating and revealing expose on the state of science itself and how it is (not) managing the impact of politics, belief systems and sociology. Throughout the book, I was continually reminded of other great scientific controversies of the age - (global warming comes to mind), the same ingredients are there - the rush to judgement; the quashing of dissent; the concealing of contrary evidence and the almost religious fervour of believers.
My father and I despite being avid walkers and exercising every day, are overweight and have been since birth. We have commenced making the dietary changes suggested by the book and we have continued reading on this topic - in 2 weeks we have lost a combined 9 kilograms.
We are never hungry, general aches and pains are diminishing and we feel better each day. This may be placebo or it may be from weight loss. While not morbidly obese, we have both felt guilty and judged throughout our lives - fat is a weapon to beat people with and while you would not pick on a blind person or a deaf person it is always open season on "lazy" and "greedy" overweight people. As a (thin)doctor once said to me "no fat people came out of Auschwitz"; you must have a "hand to mouth" problem - no naturally thin person can truly understand the cruelty of the casual judgements that they make every day on people who are genetically programmed to be more solid.
Thanks to this book, we are taking even more control of our lives and our weight.

THE DIET DELUSION

My colleague who is a fit 54 year old racquet ball player recommended me this book( he is a belt and braces accountant)and has been under scrutiny and advice for a heart problem and in turn is putting all his scrutiny into cholesteral related dogma .He gave me a copy.
This book is so well researched. The clear but unbiased reporting on what Mr Taubes has researched and documented is
priceless information on what we should be considering to fuel our bodies for optimum health.
I will be giving this to all my family and whenever possible recommending it to all my friends. as my friend felt a need to pass it to me.

This book on ocean and atmosphere dynamics has been a classic ever since its appearance and there are various reasons. It is written in an extremely lucid style, it covers most of the standard material of the field, and gets the balance between mathematical integrity and simplicity exactely right. I found it a pleasure to read it.

An Onslaught of Survival Situations Define This Fun, Well Illustrated Book

My teenage son reads a lot of survival books, and this summer it was clear that it's paying off. This summer, when we were out on a week-long kayaking trip, he was more prepared than I was and his fire-making skills were getting fine tuned.

This is one of the coolest survival books I've read. Anyone who likes comics will be predisposed to liking this book, as each chapter is illustrated with some cool comic-styled illustrations: a truck goes off a cliff in one scene, another shows an attacking bear, and still another captures a drowning swimmer. And if you're interesting in survival dramas (films about shipwrecks and climbing expeditions gone wrong, for instance) you'll also love this book. More on that later.

Like most survival books in this genre, this one breaks things down into scenes and types of survival: water emergencies, broken-down cars, being lost in the desert, being snowbound, surviving a twister, and so on. The list goes on and on, which is what is cool about this book, as it moves through a range of different skill sets.

What I like most about this book is the combo of graphic design (every page is new and interesting, with cleverly designed sections) and compelling narratives. It's not a simply how-to book, but instead one in which the authors talk you through what you might deal with. Turning to a random page, I find this description, for instance "Tornadoes occur on every continent except for remote Antarctica, but the United States is the nation where they strike the most. The is due to America's size, central flatlands, and intersecting weather patterns." So the book is informational, draws you in, and then offers a wide range of advice. (This twister section is particularly nice, as it doesn't assume that everyone has a terrific basement to hide in. Mobile homes are covered, for instance, as well as being trapped out in the open.)

So what are the problems with this book? As I mentioned, this book seems geared for an audience that is into survival-themed dramas. As the authors make clear, some of what is covered in this book is a bit sensational and unlikely to actually happen to you. Being prepared to survive means being ready for anything. However, parts of this book are more unrealistic than others. For instance, the section on surviving urban brawls and violence and the section on surviving a home invasion simplify things a bit. You could write an entire book on either one of those topics -- and some authors have -- but this book deals quickly with each very distinct situation. Even though the authors suggest flight (vs. fight) if possible, the way this book is illustrated really makes FIGHT! look more exciting and worthwhile. So it's a fun book to read if you want to imagine various scenarios, but this is not a plodding, practical book about preparedness. Instead, it's a book about imagining all of what could possibly go wrong, which makes for a fun read ... but a book that needs to be complemented with some more practical survival guides.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. It's definitely worth reading and rereading.

What I'm picking up on mostly is you must use your own good judgement and fight or flight skills to survive the unspeakable of attacks.
