How to make alarm management interesting!

If your automation system is creating alarms that do not require an immediate response, then you need this book. How do you define an immediate response you might ask? If the alarm is something that needs response within minutes as opposed to hours or days, that is immediate. A really good read, we've followed some of the recommendations and have made our alarm system "useful" again.

I recommend the book

I enjoyed reading the book, and as the previous reviewer noted, van Dijk certainly did her homework. The topic is of interest for me because, generally, it aims at brining technologies and the material sphere unto issues that are usually labelled abstract or psyche-something - like personal memories. Also, I have written about medium theory and wanted to see the transition the author discusses from analog media (specifically visual media or photos) to digital ones. So in all these respects it's interesting and clearly written and I will use one of its chapters as one of the introductory pieces for my Media and Material Culture class. My own interests and preferences are a. more critical (neoliberal, commercialization and control of images and their production, copyright and distribution), 2. More on public issues and the public sphere, and less of an emphasis on autobiographical and personal memory. Although I know that these are overlapping - if not indistinguishable – and I guess that this is the point I am trying to make. 3. finally, and as part of a more critical rendering, I’m interested in gender and what van Dijk has to say about this. Where there is a discussion of ‘family’ and of ‘autobiographical’ images, it seems to me to always ask for suspicious about gender and visual rights and restrictions pertaining to women.

How technology is changing memory

Jos� van Dijck raises interesting questions in this book: How are digital artifacts different from physical ones? What does the advent of zero-cost memorabilia mean for how we construct our identities? How will this technological transition affect our culture and our sense of history?

These are good questions to reflect on, but this book gives us few answers. There are some enjoyable (and potentially illuminating) stories in here; my favorite is of the radio station in The Netherlands plays "the two thousand most popular songs of all times" (the subject of Ch. 4). Unfortunately, these stories are interspersed with unparseable sentences such as "In conjunction to the technological script, we hence need to look at how social practices and cultural forms transpire through the concrete manifestations of diary writings and lifelogs" (p.67) and "The pair brain/mind is hierarchically off set from the pairs technology/materiality and cultural practices/forms; the latter two are mere conceptual aids in the neurobiological theory of movies-in-the-brain" (p. 125).

Clearly, van Dijck has done her homework. But can any amount of social theory shed light on such broad questions? After reading this book, I don't feel like I've gained any new insight beyond the traditional mantra of the humanities: It's complicated.

Worthwhile Ideas and References That Need Editing

This book was written by former Speaker Gingrich and his associates for several reasons. First, to lay out the case in Chapter 2 "why reforming healthcare is doomed to fail and only a process of [completely] transforming health and healthcare can succeed". Second, to provoke a national debate and evolve a strategy for the solution one of the greatest potential political and budget crises of the early part of this century as the baby boomers reach retirement age and Medicare's unfunded liabilities skyrocket. And last, to provide examples of "transforming methodologies" that are actually being successfully utilized today and references to other information sources (including many web sites). He firmly believes that is possible to achieve the twin goals summarized in the book's title and have better health care while spending less at the same time.
This book posits that the single greatest problem (but by no means the only one) with our current healthcare system is the third party payor system that has arisen from the perverse incentives introduced into the tax code that have made employer provided healthcare the dominant organizational methodology in our country today. The effects of these incentives are exacerbated by the increasing share of medical spending being reimbursed through the government Medicare and Medicaid programs. Consumers of healthcare are frustrated because their choices are limited; providers are frustrated by the bureaucracy, paperwork and interference with their medical judgment as well as the lack of tort reform; and the funders (taxpayers and employers) are horrified by the rate of increase in their costs. One of the unintended consequences of these incentives is that the system treats illness much more effectively than it promotes health and personal responsibility for the consequences of your actions.
The book contains many interesting insights on the role of technology, not only in the administration and provision of more responsive service by providers and in recordkeeping that minimizes duplication of effort and decreases the prevalence of errors but also in the furthering of scientific advances themselves. The frontier of medical and scientific discovery today is at the intersection of chemistry, physics and biotechnology, and chapter nine provides some observations in this regard. The overall tone of the book is both urgent and hopeful, as the author clearly understands the huge political difficulties in changing such a complex system with so many different constituencies.
This book definitely a worthwhile read for anyone interested in a broadbrush approach by a serious student of the subject with the perspective that the author brings to the topic. However, the book suffers from some flaws. First, it is a collection of loosely connected chapters. They are somewhat sequential but can stand on their own. The disadvantage of this approach is that there is an incredible amount of repetitive material if one reads the whole book. While the emphasis of some of the points is appropriate, this is a mix of anecdotes, exhortation, well thought out proposals, interesting information, and moral outrage at the consequences of the perverse incentives of our current system (unnecessary death and suffering). Second, the former Speaker lapses into his habit of occasionally getting so excited about the potential impact of something that he believes it is necessary to mandate it at the federal level (e.g. an immediately accessible computerized database of all medical information for each individual) despite all the evidence that this will stifle creativity and curb further beneficial evolutionary developments. In addition to the very negative implications for our liberty.) Third and most discouraging, he proposes very large increases in federal spending in several areas, indicating his belief in market failure and his lack of faith that individuals and private industry will make the appropriate choices with regard to such areas as funding basic research, preventive treatment for diabetes, etc. Such suggestions seem at odds with the basic premise of this book, i.e, that informed consumers with the appropriate knowledge deserve the maximum amount of flexibility in their healthcare choices and need to accept as much personal responsibility in their consumption of healthcare as in other areas of their lives. Thus, while I want to encourage widespread readership of this book and discussion of its ideas, it does not deserve five stars.
Disclaimer: the author is a personal friend of mine, but he never requested that I review it and my copy was purchased at this site, not provided free to me. I serve on the Board of Directors of an organization which he once headed, and healthcare reform is one area that we both agree is crucial to our country's future, although we disagree on many aspects of various proposed reforms. We agree in the areas of public policy where my libertarian ideals intersect with his conservative principles, while strongly disagreeing in such areas as the decriminalization of many currently illegal substances. I believe that my review is objective with regard to this book but wanted the readers of this review to have all relevant information that might have influenced my recommendation.

I adopted this as the text for graduate MIS courses in database design/logical data modeling almost 10 years ago. Still the best working reference on relational databases from logical design through physical issues on indexes, tuning, etc. The only reference book I recommend to anyone needing to understand relational database design. FIVE STARS PLUS. EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR EVERYONE--regardless of knowledge or skill. Great book! As an engineer with 35 years experience in the computer industry, I have taken countless corporate classes, community college, technical college and University classes to learn new things and keep my skills updated. I learned BASIC and CPM in the late 1970's so things have come a long long ways. In all these classes I have had expensive text books, expensive class notes (from bookstores), or stacks of copied and recopied notes, tables and articles. I have yet to find any of them enjoyable to read, or even easy to read. I have yet to find any of them complete, error free or able to stand alone as a resource to help you do what you are trying to do. Look at any computer programmers bookshelf, you will see hundreds of books, many of them on the same subjects because none are thorough enough and you have to buy dozens of them. This book is very impressive. Its covers the most important topics and explains everything succinctly. I expected to see the typical charts and diagrams, for example, i expected for HTML to see the color codes and various other reference, and its there, but so much more. The author has taken each of the various components of each topic and listed them by subject and alphabetically sorted, and explained what and how they are used. This is true for all of the subjects--from HTML, to WordPRess, JAVA, --all of it. Its all excellent. Its easy to read, its well written, and I am impressed. I could use this as a text in the classes I have taught and not only do well as an instructor, but the students would and could use this book throughout their careers, or at least through their education if they do not pursue a computer career. Its title, "18 books in 1" is clever because it really is 18 books. I wont list the contents, that would be repetitive, but its got all of the most popular and current reference you would need to build websites, or to manage websites, (ie system administrator/webmaster etc). This is not an easy task and I am in awe of the author for having the wherewithal to not only do it, but to be able to put it all together and do so in a way that makes it usable for everyone from those with little or no experience, to students, to professionals--who would use it as reference material. I liked that it was not a rehash of the same old same old that you read in all of the current books, nor was it just printouts from various websites. There is some very useful and interesting information too, like the % of servers running (list of server software), or % of websites built from (website building applications) and so on. I don't know where he found it, but its interesting to see. Without a doubt I give it 5 stars. LOTS of information but in many cases, more like a reference, and probably not good for newbies; can't download example files

Wow. I'm a software developer and I can certainly tell you that there is A LOT of information in this book. It is "super-concise", and probably too concise for a lot of people. I would NOT recommend this book for a beginner or newbie. Intermediate and advanced web developers would likely find it useful. A beginner may find it useful as a reference to use in addition to a "standard" learning book that is not so concise, that takes things more slowly, and that includes more explanation.

In many places (perhaps in more places than not), it gave me the impression of a reference guide instead of teaching book. Keep that in mind. Also, some of the topics went over my head. I guess no one can be an expert in all web technologies anymore, or at least very few people. While I could spend a lot of time "mastering" each chapter, I thought it would be better to set some of the topics aside and come back to them when I have an actual need. You'll probably feel the same way and have chapters that are much more useful to you than others, but the nice thing is that the less-useful chapters might to quite useful to you later, so you'll want to keep this book on-hand.

While there are a lot of examples, you will probably need to "play" with some of them to fully understand them... that means typing them up if you get the paperback version because as far as I know, you can't download the example files. This is quite unfortunate. If you get the Kindle version then you may be able to copy and paste them and not have to type them.

Oh, I also ran into multiple typos and some errors but nothing serious enough to significantly detract from all the information.

So while this book has a lot of information (and I mean A LOT!), because of the above issues I mentioned I'm rating it 4 stars instead of 5.

I expected to see the typical charts and diagrams, for example, i expected for HTML to see the color codes and various other reference, and its there, but so much more. The author has taken each of the various components of each topic and listed them by subject and alphabetically sorted, and explained what and how they are used. This is true for all of the subjects--from HTML, to WordPRess, JAVA, --all of it. Its all excellent. Its easy to read, its well written, and I am impressed.

I could use this as a text in the classes I have taught and not only do well as an instructor, but the students would and could use this book throughout their careers, or at least through their education if they do not pursue a computer career.

Its title, "18 books in 1" is clever because it really is 18 books. I wont list the contents, that would be repetitive, but its got all of the most popular and current reference you would need to build websites, or to manage websites, (ie system administrator/webmaster etc). This is not an easy task and I am in awe of the author for having the wherewithal to not only do it, but to be able to put it all together and do so in a way that makes it usable for everyone from those with little or no experience, to students, to professionals--who would use it as reference material.

I liked that it was not a rehash of the same old same old that you read in all of the current books, nor was it just printouts from various websites. There is some very useful and interesting information too, like the % of servers running (list of server software), or % of websites built from (website building applications) and so on. I don't know where he found it, but its interesting to see.

Without a doubt I give it 5 stars. I hope he finds great success with this book---he absolutely deserves it. great book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning or doing any kind of website or network administration/building.
