"Siggy", as he is known in the industry, has over 32 of experience in designing modern hydronic heating systems, including those using renewable energy subsystems. He is a hall-of-fame member of the Radiant Panel Association, and a presenter at national and international conferences on heating and building technology. John is principal of Appropriate Designs, a consulting engineering firm in Holland Patent, NY.

Excellent resource for DIYers

Excellent book for a DIYer planning on installing a hydronic radiant system. Gives basically all the information that you need to plan and install a full system. Some of the topics are pretty involved and require some basic math, but the book walks you through everything with great detail. Covers:

1) Determining heating load estimates

2) Required water temperatures and flow rates

3) Pipe installation, including pumps and expansion tanks

4) Several approaches to zoning

5) Laying PEX tube for radiant panels

An engineer's review

The book was very useful. The only drawback was the "Hydronics Design Kit" was not included. This costs an additional $76 from Oikos.com and is referred to many times in the book. Therefore, it is almost a requirement during use of the book.

Best Resource Available

This book is THE resource for any homeowner planning to install radiant floor heat. It is written as a textbook for HVAC students, but it serves equally well as a reference and informative design resource for the average homeowner. John Siegenthaler is recognized by his peers as one of the outstanding radiant heating engineers. I highly recommend this book.

This beautifully written but at times overly ambitious book illustrates both the possibilities and the limitations of science popularizations. Chemistry professor Atkins examines the epochal ideas of science, including evolution, the role of DNA in heredity, entropy, the atomic structure of matter, symmetry, wave-particle duality, the expansion of the universe and the curvature of spacetime. Exploring the history of these concepts from the ancient Greeks onward, the chapters amount to case studies in the power of the Galilean paradigm of the "isolation of the essentials of a problem," and mathematical theorizing disciplined by real-world experiment, as humanity's understanding moves from armchair speculation and observational lore to testable theories of great explanatory power. Atkins presents this progress as a search for evermore fundamental abstractions: DNA emerges as the fleeting physical instantiation of immortal information; thermodynamics is a universal tendency to disorder; and much of physics itself a logical corollary of pure geometry. Writing in lucid, engaging prose illustrated with many ingenious diagrams, Atkins often succeeds brilliantly in conveying the deep conceptual foundations of scientific disciplines to readers lacking a mathematical background. Not Popular Science

As a science graduate and experienced teacher of A level Chemistry and GCSE Science I thought this book would be a nice overview of what is going on (and has gone on) in science. How wrong I was.

This book flips from some nice historical detail and context to some very complex ideas in a wide range of disciplines. The transition is not smooth and I felt in the turn of a page I went from being firmly in my comfort zone to being completely out of my depth.

Atkins can describe things with skill but he has bitten off more than he can chew in trying to cram so much into one book and the bits that he misses out were the links between school level and graduate level science, which unfortunately are likely to be the bits that his readership will be most interested in.

With better editing (or choosing of content level). This could have been a good and informative book. Unfortunately, it was interesting in parts but unreachable in others.

Good Overview of Science

P.W.(Peter) Atkins is the author of the excellent textbook "Physical Chemistry", "Molecules", a general overview of nature's chemicals from the Scientific American Library, and the imaginative "Periodic Kingdom". In his latest popularization, "Galileo's Finger", Atkins outlines what he considers are the ten central ideas of science. Without bias, he only chooses two from his own area of expertise. The rest are from the realms of biology, physics and astronomy. Given that only two to three of the chapters are part of a high school curriculum, the book is essential reading for anyone who has not studied science past that point. His writing neither oversimplifies nor bores the reader, reminiscent of the way the late Stephen Jay Gould practised his craft. I love Atkins' definition of chemistry, " It is the bridge between the perceived world of substances and the imagined world of atoms."

Good, but uneven

Atkins follows in the tradition of Gamow and Asimov but with more depth.

Unfortunately, the narrative thread skips frequently. Atkins introduces an idea (for example, Turing machines), then quickly jumps to Universal Turing Machines and a diagonalization proof that the Halting Problem has no solution. The essays would have benefitted from a smoother, more continuous exposition, even at the expense of advanced material.

A sad superficial example of a school science textbook.

My son has this for a 9th grade class. I looked through it. This is a badly written picture book. There are errors throughout. (The speed of light is specified as 3.00000000 E 8 m/s - no it's not, and if you are going to round it off to 3E8 m/s have the brains not to carry 8 decimal places behind the point, if you are teaching scientific notation remember significant digits - don't mix the two processes). There is little use of formulas, and few numerical calculations. Carbohydrates are described and a chemical diagram is given. Lipids are glossed over in a single sentence as being similar to carbohydrates, but there isn't comparative information, and no second diagram. They waste space with titles like 'think critically'. What does it mean to urge an uninformed child to think critically. What parameters are you going to suggest they use? Oh, there is the standardized test practice in a lot of places.

Polarized lenses are shown as sun glasses - which are dark to begin with - so both aligned and crossed lenses are dark. Lasers are described as not spreading out the beam. They are shown as gas tubes with mirrors on the ends. But the purpose of those mirrors is not described. The index of refraction is mentioned once without actually discussing numerical values or implication for speed of light through a medium.

Children using this text won't learn any 'hard' science. This is a superficial level of science material, that does not come up to Wikipedia's level of thoroughness and accuracy.

About the Author
Jeremy D. Safran, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychology and former Director of Clinical Psychology at the New School for Social Research in New York City. He is also Senior Research Scientist at Beth Israel Medical Center, and Past President of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy. In addition, he is Clinical Professor at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and a faculty member at the Stephen A. Mitchell Center for Relational Studies. Dr. Safran is on the editorial boards of Psychotherapy Research and Psychoanalytic Psychology, and is an associate editor for the journal Psychoanalytic Dialogues. He has published more than 150 articles and chapters, and several books, including Negotiating the Therapeutic Alliance: A Relational Treatment Guide; Emotion in Psychotherapy; The Therapeutic Alliance in Brief Psychotherapy; Interpersonal Process in Cognitive Therapy; and Psychoanalysis and Buddhism: An Unfolding Dialogue. Dr. Safran and his colleagues have conducted empirical research on the topic of therapeutic impasses for the past 25 years. A remarkable book!

This is a truly remarkable book, and an invaluable contribution to the field. Jeremy Safran's superb writing sheds light on psychoanalytic concepts while also placing them in historical context. He presents complex ideas with impressive ease. After reading this book, I feel I've gained a great deal of depth of understanding of psychoanalytic concepts - Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Therapies is a must read for anyone with an interest in psychoanalytic theory and practice.

Informative, Reader-Friendly

This was a very informative and clearly-written book. I read it for a clinical theory class and it gave me a comprehensive picture of the history of psychoanalysis and the basic tenets (e.g. transference, countertransference, etc.) I highly recommend it to any beginning student of psychoanalysis.

Wonderful book

This is an impressive book from an impressive psychodynamic thinker/empirical researcher. One of the most difficult tasks faced by any writer is to tackle a discipline with a long history (over 100 years) that has already been the subject of 100s (if not thousands) of other volumes. The difficulty comes from the fact that one has to not only make it interesting, but also strike an uneasy balance b/w accuracy (viz., paying homage to a complex and nuanced past) and accessability (i.e., simplifying yet not oversimplifying). I believe that this balance is achieved by Safran. Neophytes (graduate students and advanced undergraduates) and experts alike will gain from reading this work and the particular intellectual synthesis that Safran achieves. Though the book is consistently good, chapters 3 and 4 are real highlights. I will definitely be recommending this book to my doctoral trainees.

Sixty crisp, skillfully composed photographs follow children from all corners of the globe through a day, revealing activities that are strikingly similar yet widely divergent in the details. The juxtaposition of images is often remarkable. A photo of a girl waving from the back window of a Pennsylvania school bus appears beside a picture of a child in China's Yunnan Province, whose commute entails crossing a river in a seat suspended from a zip line. Many of the photographers (the images come from numerous sources) use light to dramatic effect: a soft glow illuminates the faces of eight girls in Gujarat, India; sunlight streams through windows as four boys stand at prayer in an Indo-nesian mosque. Supplementing Kerley's (A Cool Drink of Water) minimal, pithy text (Recess rocks! And so does lunch) are substantive concluding notes that specify the locations, provide cultural context for the photos and—most intriguing—offer occasional photographers' perspectives: the photo of the Indian girls was taken in a refugee camp (They were wonderful and full of laughter despite the terrible conditions). Barbara Kerley is the author of National Geographic’s A Cool Drink of Water, You and Me Together, and A Little Peace. As a former Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal and a one-time resident of Guam, who now lives in northern California, Kerley is interested in showing how a richly diverse world shares much in common.

This is a stunning book of photographs showing how children around the world spend their day!

All around the world children begin to rise after the sun comes up. They get up out of their beds, wash themselves "and celebrate a new day." Mmmmm, it's time for breakfast. The children have many different kinds of breakfasts to start their day. Some have porridge, some have pancakes while others have churros or toast. "Hot sweet tea with plenty of milk" is a good way to top it off. Eight little girls with smiley impish faces are getting ready to head to school. Some children only have to walk a short way to school while others have to cross a river using a cable. Riding a bus or hopping on a bus is a very easy way to get to school!

At school it is time to get serious. Children around the world read, write, have music lessons, write math problems on the board, work on their science projects and dabble in arts and crafts. Of course everyone seems to love recess and lunch. In the afternoon there's more learning to do and then "kids stand up, clean up and head for home any way they can." Some children aren't done when school is out. They have to work, play, do homework, finish chores and then think . . . about "what's for dinner?" Of course everyone has something that's a bit different than the next person. When the sun sets it's time for family and then time to get to bed. Sleep well, for the next day will come soon!

This is a beautiful pictorial book that captures the daily lives of children around the world. Despite their differences, on some level they are all alike. As the author states, "Kids go to school, they play, they spend time with their families. This book represents one day, from sunrise to sunset, around the world-a day we share together." The photographs are stunning and very appealing. They capture everything from impish grins to beaming smiles (no crying here!). In the back of the book each photograph is reproduced and has a location and most have a "story" underneath. There is also a map showing where the photographs were taken. This is a book that school children will be fascinated with. How did you spend your school days?

Get This Book!

I cannot think of a better way to express how I feel about it, other than to urge you to buy it or borrow it NOW. It is informative, educational, poignant, heart wrenching, jolly, lighthearted--the photos are beyond words.

To actually see how children around the globe spend their day--just amazing. it will make the American youngster sit up and take an interest, that's for sure.

I read this aloud to my kids. Then they wanted to individually page through the book and look at the pictures. Then they wanted to look at the last few pages of the book which tell where each picture was taken. It was bedtime so I made them go to sleep, but I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow they're eager to look on a globe to find where each picture is from. Excellent photos, and although the faces and places look different, the book emphasizes similarities in our day-to-day lives.
