Such were the kinds of questions that Myron Uhlberg’s deaf father asked him from earliest childhood, in his eternal quest to decipher, and to understand, the elusive nature of sound. Quite a challenge for a young boy, and one of many he would face.

Uhlberg’s first language was American Sign Language, the first sign he learned: “I love you.” But his second language was spoken English—and no sooner did he learn it than he was called upon to act as his father’s ears and mouth in the stores and streets of the neighborhood beyond their silent apartment in Brooklyn.

Resentful as he sometimes was of the heavy burdens heaped on his small shoulders, he nonetheless adored his parents, who passed on to him their own passionate engagement with life. These two remarkable people married and had children at the absolute bottom of the Great Depression—an expression of extraordinary optimism, and typical of the joy and resilience they were able to summon at even the darkest of times.

From the beaches of Coney Island to Ebbets Field, where he watches his father’s hero Jackie Robinson play ball, from the branch library above the local Chinese restaurant where the odor of chow mein rose from the pages of the books he devoured to the hospital ward where he visits his polio-afflicted friend, this is a memoir filled with stories about growing up not just as the child of two deaf people but as a book-loving, mischief-making, tree-climbing kid during the remarkably eventful period that spanned the Depression, the War, and the early fifties.

In this memoir about growing up the son of deaf parents in 1940s Brooklyn, Uhlberg recalls the time his uncle told him he saw his nephew as cleaved into two parts, half hearing, half deaf, forever joined together. These worlds come together in this work, his first for adults, as Uhlberg, who has written several children's books (including Dad, Jackie, and Me, which won a 2006 Patterson Prize) effortlessly weaves his way through a childhood of trying to interpret the speaking world for his parents while trying to learn the lessons of life from the richly executed Technicolor language of his father's hands. With the interconnection of two different worlds, there is bound to be humor, and Uhlberg is able to laugh at himself and his family's situation. He recounts unsuccessfully trying to reinterpret his teacher's constructive criticism for his parents and finding himself pressed into duty interpreting the Joe Louis prize fights for his dad. There are, of course, more poignant moments, as Uhlberg tries to explain the sound of waves for his curious father or when he finds himself in charge of caring for his epileptic baby brother because his parents can't hear the seizures. As Uhlberg grows up through the polio epidemic, WWII and Jackie Robinson's arrival in Brooklyn, he also grows out of his insecurities about his family and the way they are viewed as outsiders. Instead, looking back, he gives readers a well-crafted, heartwarming tale of family love and understanding. (Apr.)

Adult/High School—Uhlberg fondly recounts stories of Brooklyn during the Great Depression and World War II in this memoir of his childhood. He grew up with the beautiful, expressive signs of his father and the equally beautiful spoken language of the hearing world. At a young age, the active, mischievous boy gained the responsibility of acting as translator for his father and sometimes as shield from the often-cruel hearing adults in a less politically correct time. In addition, his younger brother was diagnosed with epilepsy, a misunderstood disease at that time. Uhlberg's emotions toward his family, and especially his father, run the gamut from embarrassment to anger to a deep and abiding love. Sections titled "Memorabilia" pepper the narrative, and many black-and-white photographs are scattered throughout this rich, textured portrait of the deaf community on Coney Island at a turbulent time in U.S. history. The Languages of Love

I loved Hands of My Father! I devoured it. And I, the woman whose books *never* have so much as a cracked binding, highlighted passages of particular beauty. And there are quite a few passages like that...

Born to two deaf parents, American Sign Language was Uhlberg's first language; then, English, spoken and written. As a very young child, he was forced to "translate" the hearing world for his parents. He learned early on that words are often painful but sometimes wonderful. Uhlberg endured a child's shame at seeing his father being treated like a child himself simply because he was deaf. (He translated slurs and hateful words exactly as they were said, because his father demanded it.)

Even though his childhood was stunted by having to act as his parents' go-between with the hearing world as well as by having to be responsible for his epileptic younger brother, it's obvious Ulberg was raised with love and concern. Afraid his precious new baby was born deaf, his father went to great lengths to make sure Myron could hear. During the Great Depression, Ulberg slept with a radio always playing beside his bed -- first a "baby" table-top model and then a gigantic Philco aptly described as looking like a cathedral -- because his parents worried that his hearing might waste away if not used.

This book is rich with love of all kinds: Mother Sarah's love-through-food and his father's love-through-touch, the boy's love for his father. There's old love and lost love and love of 1940's comic books. In Uhlberg's word, Love, like ASL, is varied and knee-deep in contextual meaning. And somewhere along the way -- after the cathedral radio and before his first library card -- it's obvious that Myron Uhlberg fell in love words. For him "Sign was a beautiful painting, absorbed whole..." whereas his second language "required the brain for translation." This is frankly the best comparison of ASL and English I've ever read.

Hands of My Father: A Hearing Boy, His Deaf Parents and the Language of Love is not so much a memoir but a literal love letter. It's a word painting of growing up that should not be missed.

Moving, honest and profound

Uhlberg does not romanticize growing up the oldest son of deaf parents, Sarah and Lou, at a time when little cultural effort was made to understand or accommodate the deaf. He speaks frankly and with some shame of the humiliation he felt when others mocked his family, of the resentment for having to do so much more than most little boys have to handle in helping them navigate through the world. But he doesn't cast himself as the hero of a tragedy. The picture he paints is a well-rounded one of parents whose needs were often a challenge, but who offered much in return. Uhlberg seems pretty clear that in spite of the burden of their deafness, his parents themselves were a gift--a gift I thank him for sharing.

I read it. I loved it. I am confident others will, too. Uhlberg can indeed speak the language of love--not just the sign language he used to communicate with his deaf parents, but the written language he uses to communicate to his readers. I have not read many memoirs that speak as straight to the heart as this one does. It doesn't rely for emotional appeal on overblown metaphors or flights of fancy, but on honesty and a willingness to share. At heart a love story between Uhlberg and his father Lou (though Sarah is not shirked), it is all the more moving because it is so real...and so very well written. With clear, fluid prose and well-chosen detail, Uhlberg evokes both imagination and emotion. I laughed; I cried; I hated to put it down.

One of Lou's greatest fears was the loss of his ability to communicate. His parents, like Sarah's, had never really learned to sign; he never knew them. Gazing on a child in an iron lung, he could not help but think of the horror of being so cut off. His hands, the only thing he had to share himself; how could he make himself known to others without them? I could not help but think while reading this that even so many years after his father's death, Uhlberg is still acting as Lou's translator, still bridging the gap between his parents and the hearing world. He has *become* his father's hands.

I suspect Lou Uhlberg would be pleased. I *know* I am.

Heartfelt Memoir

Myron Uhlberg tells the story of his childhood - he was born of two deaf parents in Brooklyn in the depression years through the early 50's. As a child he had to carry the responsibility of being the bridge to the hearing world for his parents and also keep a watchful eye on his epileptic younger brother. Uhlberg shares the unvarnished truth - brutal honesty on the shame and embarrassment he felt by these "burdens" - in addition to seeing, hearing and feeling the ignorance that his Father faced in all aspects of his life (work, shopping, riding train) - and enduring the cruel painful slights, slurs and the mocking directed at his Father.

"I was never able to get used to the initial look of incomprehension that bloomed on the stranger's face when my father failed to answer, and the way that look turned to shock at the sound of his harsh voice announcing his deafness, then metastasized into revulsion, at which point the stranger would turn and flee as if my father's deafness were a contagious disease. Even now, seventy long years in the future, the memory of the shame I sometimes felt as a child is as corrosive as battery acid in my veins, and bile rises unbidden in my throat."

What is clear from reading this book is that Uhlberg's Father was an exceptional man - a man who persevered with sheer determination and will power in a hearing world.

`"Hearing people think I'm stupid. I am not stupid." My father's hands fell silent.'

I found myself yearning for more details on how Uhlberg's Father and Mother coped in an unforgiving environment in the harsh depression era - more details on their struggle of being deaf in a hearing world - how they managed to raise two infants in a hearing world. And, conversely I felt myself drifting away from the story when Uhlberg moved into sharing his day-to-day childhood memories not involving his parents.

The love between his parents - - and his parents' love for him and his brother oozes out throughout the memoir. The book opens with an Author's Note: "This memoir is how I remember my life growing up with my deaf parents, and to the best of my ability I've made every effort to get right what matters most. They deserve no less from me, their son."

I believe that Uhlberg did get right what matters most - the importance of a loving father and warm caring home life and the warm recollection of special treasured moments between a Father and Son. This is an honest, sincere and heartwarming memoir to his wonderful parents who he misses terribly today - I could only dream of sharing something this special with my family.

She examines the artists who created images of Guadalupe, their patrons, and the diverse viewing audiences for whom those images were intended. This exegesis reveals that visual evidence functioned on a par with written texts (treatises, chronicles, and sermons of ecclesiastical officialdom) in measuring popular beliefs and political strategies.

Jeannette Favrot Peterson is Professor of Art and Architectural History at the University of California at Santa Barbara. She is the author of The Paradise Garden Murals of Malinalco: Utopia and Empire in Sixteenth-Century Mexico, which won the College Art Association’s Charles Rufus Morey Book Award, and coeditor of Seeing across Cultures in the Early Modern World.

A remarkable and beautiful book!!

This is a remarkable book. A real academic coup de force. The text
is fascinating, about the black madonna image, its meaning and origins,
and the illustrations are lovely. Jeanette Peterson is a respected art
historian and this work will surely merit her only more kudos.

This a very beautiful and wonderfully detailed volume

This a very beautiful and wonderfully detailed volume, but it elects not to acknowledge anything in support of the tilma image's acheiropoietic origins. Philip Serna Callahan's infra-red evaluation is dismissed in one sentence. Professor Petersen questions a statement in his monograph in which he writes that the mantle's color appears to be tempera, but also has the transparency of watercolor. She decides this is simple double-talk, even though it was just part of many findings which led to his summation that the Virgin's blue mantle color and condition are inexplicable. There's also no mention of the mid-1990s unearthing of the Codex Escalada or Ernest Burris' technical analysis of the mid-16th-century copy of the Nican Mopohua, found in the New York Public Library. The author's point of view is clear and she's welcome to it, but the work feels incomplete because of it. She is focused on proving how Juan Diego and his image evolved into a 17th-century miracle-mill, but this Guadalupe conspiracy theory never really rings true.

***Spoilers Included to Explain Review***A bit Rushed but had Potential.

*****Read at your own risk, SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW*****

Addison and Stephen meet in high school but Addison rejected him and caused him misery. Stephen goes on to become successful. He and Addison reconnect and the truth of her actions are revealed. Only, Stephen is living a lie, hiding who he really is from her. He knows her but she doesn't know him as they date. They fall for each other when the real reason behind his high school shame is told.

He leaves Addison and moves on. During a moment of weakness they reconnect. They are forever enter twinned.

Stephen decides to move on with his new life without Addison.

More drama occurs but Addison and Stephen end up with a HEA story.

The drama at the end is rushed with the HEA. Stephen was a jerk near the end and Addison had no back bone and forgave him too quickly in my eyes. He was weeks away from marriage. He treated her like a Jezebel and acted like it was nothing.

Pros:
Drama
Angst
Decent storytelling
Complete story, as far as the plot and conclusion. No sequel!!!

Cons:
This is my first book with this author, but the style needs a bit of work. It was first person, but lacked the flow at times seasoned authors have.
Misuse of 'then and than.' Makes me cringe.
Stephen treated Addison horribly despite her actions toward him when they were teenagers.
The conclusion and HEA was too rushed. He was weeks away and then a day away from marrying another woman that he also loved, but she got back with him in a week. Huh???
Addison had no backbone.

This story has many of the elements that I love in a romance:

•First-person POV: I love when the hero and heroine offer their perspective as the narrative unfolds.

•Flashbacks: This story begins in the present, takes a trip down memory lane, and then fast-forwards ahead to the present.

•Secrets: One that is really the basis of this narrative. A secret that is so explosive, it could irreparably tear things apart forever.
•Dirty dog ex: I love to hate a good ain’t ish ex.

•Plot Twists: You know the kind that has shaped the way you’ve felt about a person forever, but when the truth comes out, the game completely changes, but when the truth actually comes out…? Yeah, this has it…

•Good hot lovin: Ms. Piaget can write a love scene! They weren’t gratuitous and had me writhing in my seat…

•Unpredictability: I pride myself on figuring out how a plot will unfold, but this one literally had me guessing all the way to the end.

More Like an Obsession

This is the third book from this writer that I've read, the first book I thought was good, the second book, not so much, by the third book I expected her writing to have been much improved, it was in some ways and wasn't in others. There are parts of this book that are bogged down with trivial details, grammar issues and missing words. What was interesting about this book, were the portrayal of the main characters angst, insecurities and their tendency to deceive each other and themselves about their past behaviour. I salute the writer's honesty about Stephen deciding to marry someone else & showing how he had no issues with having sex with his future bride eventhough he was in love with someone else, there was no pretension on his part of him being sexually attracted to his fiance, this was very realistic in my view.

Good book, fresh perspective on the market!

Interest rate markets is a different book than many published for the rates space as it focuses on intuition. Unlike many rates books on the market, the aim is not to price complex securities, but rather to understand and forecast the movement of liquid rate products such as Treasuries, mortgages and swaps. There are very few equations in the book and the emphasis is on a logical thought process to forming views on rates.
The book starts out with an introduction to the wide range of liquid products traded in the rates space including bonds, swaps, and futures. Once the basics of these products have been described, basic frameworks around taking views on the outright direction of rates is described. This includes both very long term factors as well as short term data releases. After the basic framework is outlined, common types of rates trades are discussed which allow traders to express more specific views. Examples include swap spreads and carry trades which are not discussed frequently in other books. In addition to trades related to underlying securities, the book addresses interest rate options and their place in a rate portfolio. Finally, practical hedging strategies are expanded upon including pros and cons of using empirical methods such as regression.
Overall, I believe this book would be useful to anyone trying to gain a more intuitive understanding of interest rates and fulfills a needed niche in the space of fixed income books which tend to be either very model intensive or very basic in their discussion.

A Fixed Income text for AFTER Business School

As a former rates trader at a major institution, in my estimation, this book is simply the best text & reference for practitioners in the interest rates markets. For rates traders/salespeople, this book essentially replaces three books (Fabozzi's "Handbook of Fixed Income Securities", Belton's "The Treasury Bond Basis" and Burghardt's "The Eurodollar Futures and Options Handbook") you may have on your desk at work.

While the other three texts (particularly the last two if you're an MBA student), may cover their respective material in more depth, Mr. Jha's book approaches the material with a traders view in mind. His casual, and often humorous tone makes the material approachable and easy to comprehend for the 1st year Analyst you're about to give this book to. His analogy of Chevy's vs. Ferrari's in describing the Cheapest to Deliver option in Treasury futures was both entertaining AND lucid.

Although the rates markets have been written about extensively (unsurprisingly as it exists as the most fundamental of fixed income markets), Mr. Jha's book closes a major hole in the outstanding literature and should be required reading for any incoming Sales and Trading Analyst or Associate.

I was surprised by this book. There is very little math in this book, which would make it a popular book for giving someone an introduction the bond markets.

It covers all of the non-credit, non-mortgage markets. It will not replace Handbook of Fixed Income Securities 7th Edition, but it will supplement it, because this is an easier read on the areas that it covers.

Swaps, futures, rolls, options -- this book gives a friendly introduction to all of them.

Quibbles

The flipside of no math is that many things are not explained as well as they should be, or get glossed over. It would be better to ignore principal components analysis than to mention it and not give much explanation. (A brief appendix, maybe? Same for other math topics?)

Who would benefit from this book:

Beginners with a serious interest in the fixed income markets would benefit. No one else.

About the Author
JAMIE PURVIANCE is one of America’s top grilling experts and Weber’s master griller. He graduated from Stanford University and the Culinary Institute of America before launching a career as a food writer for publications such as Bon Appetit, Better Homes and Gardens, Fine Cooking, Town & Country, and the Los Angeles Times. He is the author of numerous cookbooks including Weber’s Way to Grill, a James Beard Award nominee and New York Times best seller. Why yes-you SHOULD buy yourself a copy!

As a cookbook collector, an outdoor cooking enthusiast and former BBQ competitor (I even got the gaudy trophies to prove it lol!) I have a number of Mr. Purviance's books. I concur with the other reviewers that this is far and away his best work yet. He has pushed the envelope beyond American BBQ, and is very much mirroring the trends of what is happening with the BBQ scene across the country.
I was reading from the preface in the first Weber book I bought circa 1999, Art of the Grill. Even back then Mr. Purviance was providing the gentle nudge to expand the reader's culinary comfort zone, back then it was Greek style lamb chops with tzatziki and jerk chicken. This book goes way beyond to showcase influences of Korean, Vietnamese and even Filipino cuisines, yet still manages a very proper nod to good ol' American BBQ.
The Weber books are always lusciously photographed and impeccably documented, arguably the perfect blend of art and science-not unlike cooking itself. I bought this as the Kindle edition but I think that I'm going to have to buy the printed version also, something about all the wonderful photography in an actual book. Guess I'm old school :)

This book contains some great recipes arranged by type of meat

This book contains some great recipes arranged by type of meat. I enjoy grilling and smoking but I felt I needed to take my hobby to the next level. Not only does this book have great recipes for meats but also some great ideas for appetizers and sides. Each rub or sauce has a recipe and there is a list in the back of the book. If you are stuck in a rut with your barbecuing I highly suggest this book.

And so it is with Jamie Purviance's NEW AMERICAN BARBECUE that continues the author's collaboration with Weber, the most trusted name in grilling and smoking.

This book may be Purviance’s best yet—although three of his previous titles are vying for that spot in my mind right now! Just buy the book and judge for yourself. But before launching into scrutinizing the recipes, you should first just bask in the beautiful photography, mostly from Tim Turner, and pause over Jamie's short essays—essays of place and people—that explain how American barbecue is evolving. Don't believe me? Then luxuriate in the section on seafood barbecue.

Last night I made the Spactchcocked BBQ chicken with Alabama White Sauce. I should have bought three birds. My family devoured it with one inhale. The sauce was perfectly matched to the roasted chicken. And it was so easy to do.

Purviance shows you through photographs and short text “how to do it”—spatchcocking, smoking, prepping, and the like. There’s a gallery of photographs, for example, that show Purviance grilling with a wok; it isn’t some studio model faking you through the process.

About the Author

The most powerful and excellent devotional I have read

WOW! The most powerful and excellent devotional I have read. God taught me things through his word and the words in the pages of this devotional. I highlighted throughout my copy and starting over through it again because it is that rich and good. I went on the website to see if there was a volume two that would follow this one, but there wasn't but that's okay cause I know that just like the bible scriptures as I read through it the second time there will be different things that will stand out to me as God teaches me more. Smith Wigglesworth is an awesome man of God and all his books are just as great. He doesn't beat around the bush (so to speak) but tells it like it is and as the Holy Spirit gave him the words to speak. Highly recommend this devotional to all and if I could have I would have given it 10 stars not just the five.

Be Prepared to Be Scared!

If you think Halloween couldn't get any weirder than this, then you must be dead wrong! After two kids stumble into Jonathan Chiller's shop in HorrorLand, they soon discover that a magical Floig (a stuffed animated creature with buggy frog eyes) belongs to an alien called a Weirdo, whom they later meet in the real world, where the two kids, Meg and Chris, are in serious danger. When the children discover that Bim the Weirdo feeds on human emotions, they realize how easy it will be to make the pesky alien disappear forever. After Bim returns to his home planet, Meg returns to HorrorLand on Halloween to play a scary game for Jonathan Chiller. If she wins, Meg gets to go home. But if she loses, she must stay in HorrorLand forever. Someone is stealing Meg's idenity. It turns out that the Meg's twin is a robot and so Meg returns safely home where she belongs with her family and friends. What does Jonathan Chiller have planned for all of these kids who will return to Jonathan's Chiller House to collect their payment? Find out in the next story ark! And prepare to be scared!

Good, actually great!!!

So there is this girl, and her name is Meg. She's twelve years old. She and her brother Chris get invited to Horrorland, "Where Nightmares Come To Life!". There they go to Chiller House, owned by Jonathan Chiller. Meg gets a Floig, a small, green doll whose eyes pop out of their sockets, and a little Horror. When Halloween comes, Meg and Chris find a little boy in an orange alien costume who wrecks their house. Meg starts to suspect that the orange skin is NOT a Halloween costume......

Finally, when Bim, the alien's name, leaves, Meg is mysteriously called back to Horrorland by Chiller. She then plays a game called "Double or Nothing". In the game Meg meets a phony her. A little later, Chris comes. He thinks that Fake Meg is his sister, not the other one. It happily and madly turns out that Fake Meg and "Chris" are robots made by Chiller. He sends Meg back home. When she gets home, and goes upstairs to her room, she finds Fake Meg in there!!!!!!

Double Size Horror

In this extra long Goosebumps novel, Meg and her brother Chris return from a trip to Horrorland. They are both excited about Halloween, until they get an unexpected visitor at the door. At first, they believe it is a kid dressed in an alien costume, but soon realize it is an actual alien named Bim.

Suddenly and mysteriously, Meg and Chris are transported back to Horrorland. They are chased by robots, Horrors, Goblins and Jonathan Chiller. How will they survive?

Wow! Weirdo Halloween is twice the size of a regular Goosebumps book, and it is weird. Aliens, Goblins, and robots are thrown into this original Halloween tale, with a few twist and turns and a strange cliffhanger ending. It is a chilling read!

This study aims to analyse the two main aspects of credit cards, namely, the selection factors and the impact of credit cards. In particular, the differences between Islamic Credit Cards (ICCs) and Conventional Credit Cards (CCCs)in the two aspects are explored. The selection criteria are investigated in various factors, including those that explain the first motivation for credit card holding, selection factors influenced by the credit cards’ embedded features, the difference between the satisfaction and the loyalty level of CCC holders as compared to ICC holders, the customers’ perceptions of ICCs, an investigation into whether ICCs are perceived as being inferior to CCCs, religious commitments of ICC holders as opposed to CCC holders, and how the socio-demographic characteristics may have deterministic power over the holding of ICCs and CCCs. As for the impact of credit cards, it is investigated through usage and the perceptions of credit cardholders. This study assembled primary data in Malaysia through a questionnaire survey which gathered 507 participants and semi-structured interviews with financiers or bankers,Shari’ah scholars,economist and cardholders.

Dr.Nazimah Hussin is a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia(UTM IBS). She has BSc in Finance from Arizona State University USA, MSc from Loughborough University and PhD from Durham University UK.
